Alexander Hall
Alexander Hall (January 11, 1894 – July 30, 1968) was an American film director, film editor and theatre actor. Biography Hall acted in the theatre from the age of four through 1914, when he began to work in silent movies. Following his military service in World War I, he returned to Hollywood and pursued a career in film production. He worked as a film editor and assistant director at Paramount Pictures until 1932, when he directed his first feature film, ''Sinners in the Sun''. From 1937 to 1947, he was a contract director at Columbia Pictures, where he earned a reputation for sophisticated comedies. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for ''Here Comes Mr. Jordan'' (1941). From 1934 to 1936, Hall was married to actress Lane Sisters, Lola Lane. He was also married to Marjorie Hunter. In 1952 Hall had a home in Palm Springs, California. He was engaged briefly to Lucille Ball, who left him when she met Desi Arnaz. Claire Whitney
Claire Whitney (May 6, 1890 – August 27, 1969) was an American stage and film actress who appeared in 111 films between 1912 and 1949. Only 21 of these films survive, as most have been lost. Whitney gained early acting experience with a stock theater company in Massachusetts, following which she toured the United States in a vaudeville production of ''Little Mother''. Whitney made her first film in 1913 for Solax and continued making films until 1921, mainly for Fox Film Corporation. Whitney came back to films in 1926 with a role in ''The Great Gatsby'' which would be her final silent film. She continued working in film between 1931 and 1949 when she retired. Whitney's Broadway credits include ''Broadway Interlude'' (1934), ''Page Pygmalion'' (1932), ''An Innocent Idea'' (1920), and ''The Net'' (1919). Selznick Pictures was an American film production company active between 1916 and 1923 during the silent era. History Selznick Pictures was founded in April 1916 by Lewis J. Selznick following his loss of control at World Film. Selznick moved production from his former base at Fort Lee, New Jersey to California, and brought with him Clara Kimball Young who had been World Film's biggest star.Slide p. 115 In 1917 Adolph Zukor, head of Paramount Pictures, bought a half share in the company. Selznick remained as head of the studios, but films were now released under the label of Select Pictures. In April 1919 Selznick bought out Zukor's half share in the company for over $1 million. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience.
