The Laughing Lady (1929 Film)
''The Laughing Lady'' is a 1929 sound film melodrama directed by Victor Schertzinger, starring Ruth Chatterton and produced and released by Paramount Famous Lasky Corporation. It is based on a 1922 British play, ''The Laughing Lady'', by Alfred Sutro. The play was brought to New York in 1923 and put on Broadway starring Ethel Barrymore. A 1924 Paramount silent film retitled ''A Society Scandal'' starred Gloria Swanson. It is now lost. In 1930 a sound version, A Kacago Asszony, was produced by Paramount at its studio in Joinville, France, in Hungarian with a Hungarian director and cast. :fr:Kacagó asszony It was released in the US by Paramount in 1931. Victor Schertzinger
Victor L. Schertzinger (April 8, 1888 – October 26, 1941) was an American composer, film director, film producer, and screenwriter. His films include ''Paramount on Parade'' (co-director, 1930 in film, 1930), ''Something to Sing About (1937 film), Something to Sing About'' (1937 in film, 1937) with James Cagney, and the first two "Road" pictures ''Road to Singapore'' (1940 in film, 1940) and ''Road to Zanzibar'' (1941 in film, 1941). His two best-known songs are "I Remember You (1941 song), I Remember You" and "Tangerine (1941 song), Tangerine", both with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and both featured in Schertzinger's final film, ''The Fleet's In'' (1942 in film, 1942). Dorothy Hall (actress)
Dorothy Miller, better known by her stage name Dorothy Hall (December 3, 1906 – February 3, 1953), was an American actress in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Early years Hall was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania. When she was young, her aunt had her harvest vegetables from a garden, clean them, and sell them door to door. The work earned her 5 cents per week, which she regularly spent to see films. Her parents eventually allowed her to got to New York, purportedly to study interior decorating, but she began going to a drama school. While there, she was discovered, which led to her first acting job. Career She began her career as an actress in stock theater in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. During her early years on Broadway, she studied acting under Clare Tree Major. After acting on Broadway and transitioned fully into film acting in the late 1920s. Joe King ( – ) was an American actor of silent films and talkies as well as a director and writer. Biography King was born in Austin, Texas as Joseph Sayer King and acted in 211 films from 1912 to 1946. He appeared in his later years mainly in minor, uncredited roles.
