The Last Supper (Pisani)
''The Last Supper'' is a painting depicting the Lord's Supper created by Lazzaro Pisani. It is currently the titular altarpiece of the Parish Church in Għasri dedicated to the Institution of the Eucharist. Painting The painting was commissioned by the Rev. Fr. Carmelo Caruana, curator of the church, and vice parish priest. The painting was put in place in 1917. The decorator Antonio Agius is responsible for the frame, which was done a year later. This, and his other works in the parish church are considered to be his climax. The stone sculptures at the bottom of the frame were removed when the walls of the chancel were covered in marble (see right). Restoration By 2007, due to the weight of the canvas itself, creases were forming in the painting and it was getting unstuck from its frame. BOV sponsored the restoration. The restoration was carried out by Emanuel Zammit, from Żejtun following his other works in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Gozo. References {{DEF ... Corpus Christi Church, Għasri
The Corpus Christi Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Għasri, in Gozo, Malta. It forms part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gozo. It is under current administration of the Rev. Dr Dominic Sultana. Elevation to Parish Church By a decree issued on 19 May 1921, Pope Benedict XV authorised the formation of the Corpus Christi Parish - one of the newest parishes in the diocese - with the Corpus Christi Church as the parish church. Lazzaro Pisani
Lazzaro Pisani (15 December 1854 – 31 August 1932) was a Maltese painter who was born in Żebbuġ. He is considered to be one of the most important Maltese artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Biography Pisani studied in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca but returned to Malta in 1874 after contracting malaria.Pellegrini, V.M. p. 245 He received a financial award from the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In 1885, Pisani was awarded a silver medal at the Colonial Exhibition in London for his work the ''Death of Abel''. He won another silver medal at the Colonial Exhibition of 1924. Pisani died at St. Paul's Bay. At the time of his death he was working on frescos in the churches of Siggiewi and Mġarr which he left unfinished. The artist's daughter, Maria Rosa Lazzaro, bequeathed a collection of eleven of her father's paintings to Heritage Malta in 2008 which were exhibited between 15 January – 25 March 2008. Għasri
Għasri ( mt, L-Għasri) is an administrative unit of Malta, in the western part of the island of Gozo, with a population of 525 people (as of March 2014). By population, it is the smallest village in Gozo after San Lawrenz, and the third-smallest in the Maltese Islands, after Bidnija and Mdina. Għasri, however, has a relatively large area. The village lies between the hills of Å»ebbuÄ¡ and Għammar. The name has Arabic origins and refers to the period of the day in between the afternoon and the evening. Għasri is reached by forking right on the Victoria-Għarb road just after the Aqueduct. A lighthouse on Ä urdan hill, better known as the Giordan Lighthouse dominates Għasri. The famous lighthouse rises 180 metres above sea level and was inaugurated in 1853. Its beam can be seen up to 50 kilometres away. The ''Times of Malta'' is an English-language daily newspaper in Malta. Founded in 1935, by Lord and Lady Strickland and Lord Strickland's daughter Mabel, it is the oldest daily newspaper still in circulation in Malta. Chancel
In church architecture, the chancel is the space around the altar, including the choir and the sanctuary (sometimes called the presbytery), at the liturgical east end of a traditional Christian church building. It may terminate in an apse. Overview The chancel is generally the area used by the clergy and choir during worship, while the congregation is in the nave. Żejtun
Żejtun ( mt, Iż-Żejtun ) is a city in the South Eastern Region of Malta, with a population of 11,218 at end 2016. Żejtun is traditionally known as Città Beland, a title conferred by the grandmaster of the Order of the Knights of Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim in 1797. Before that, the village was known as Casale Santa Caterina, named after its patron saint and parish titular. The old urban cores, called Bisqallin and Ħal Bisbut, largely retain their narrow medieval streets and ancient boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, the name Żejtun, or Casale Zeitoun, has referred to the settlement which developed around these two core villages.
