''The Lady from the Sea'' is a 1929 British romance film directed by Castleton Knight and starring Ray Milland, Mona Goya, and Moore Marriott. A fisherman working off the Goodwin Sands becomes romantically attached to an upper-class woman. The film was also known as ''Goodwin Sands''. The film was originally released as a silent film, but was re-released in a sound film version. It was shot at Elstree Studios and originally released by Paramount British.Wood p.67 The film's sets were designed by the art director J. Elder Wills. Castleton Knight
Castleton Knight, OBE (1894–1970) was a British film producer and director. He worked at one point as managing director of British Gaumont's newsreel division. He directed several feature films, but worked primarily in documentaries. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Wilfred Shine (12 July 1864 – 14 March 1939 in Kingston-Upon-Thames, England) was a British actor, mainly on the stage, and a specialist in melodrama. He was the father of the actor Bill Shine. Shine performed as Barney in ''John Bull's Other Island'' at 10 Downing Street for King George V and Queen Mary in 1911.
