''The Knowledge'' is the fifteenth studio album, and the fourteenth album of original material, by British rock band Squeeze, released on 13 October 2017. It is the first and only Squeeze album to feature Yolanda Charles on bass after the departure of bassist Lucy Shaw. Critical reception Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic rated ''The Knowledge'' positively; in a four out of five-star review, he proclaimed the record "a masterly latter-day work". Squeeze (band)
Squeeze are an English rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the UK, their singles " Cool for Cats", "Up the Junction", and " Labelled with Love" were top-ten chart hits; "Pulling Mussels" only made it to 44 in the UK charts. Though not as commercially successful in the United States, Squeeze had American hits with " Tempted", " Black Coffee in Bed", and "Hourglass", and were considered a part of the Second British Invasion. The vast majority of their material is composed of lyrics by Chris Difford and music by Glenn Tilbrook, who are guitarists and vocalists in the band. The duo were hailed as "the heirs to Lennon and McCartney's throne" during the band's initial popularity in the late 1970s. The group formed in Deptford, London, in 1974, and first broke up in 1982. Steve Smith (house Music Vocalist)
Steve Smith is an English singer and musician, best known as the vocalist for the house music group Dirty Vegas and as the percussionist for the new wave band Squeeze. He has recorded albums and played concerts for alternate rock band Portugal the Man since 2008. Musical career Higher Ground In 1992, Smith joined a band called Higher Ground, as a percussionist. Shortly after, band's lead singer left, and Smith became the lead vocalist. The group disbanded in the late 1990s. Dirty Vegas After Higher Ground disbanded, Smith met Paul Harris, a European club DJ, at a Swiss party. They formed a dance group called Dirty Vegas, and shortly thereafter recruited Ben Harris, who had worked at a Camden recording studio. One of the group's early songs, "Days Go By", caught the attention of a Mitsubishi executive, who tracked the group down personally to procure rights to use the song in a car advert. Simon Hanson
Simon Hanson is an English drummer, songwriter and producer. He was the former drummer of Death in Vegas and is the current drummer of British band Squeeze (band), Squeeze. Early life Hanson's father and sister both died in a plane crash in 1983. Career In 1985, Hanson formed the band Shot, which was signed by IRS records. However nothing was ever released. He was then spotted by a member of the band The Blessing (rock band), The Blessing and joined them on tours. Together they signed with MCA Records and recorded Locusts and Wild Honey. Jimmy Miller was called in to produce three tracks on the album. Miller was hugely influential on Hanson's work as Miller had been himself a drummer. Miller taught him that being creative, is not always being in control. Unfortunately Miller died before the album's release, in 1994. Stephen Large is an English, London-based keyboard player, composer, arranger, and long-term member of UK band Squeeze. Biography As well as his work with Squeeze, Stephen Large is Musical Director (touring keyboard player and arranger) for Caro Emerald. He was previously Musical Director for pop artists Rebecca Ferguson and Duffy. As a keyboard player, Large has worked with Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott, most recently contributing keyboards for their Number One album ''Manchester Calling''. Chris Difford
Christopher Henry Difford (born 4 November 1954) is an English singer, musician, songwriter and record producer. He is a founding member and songwriter of the rock group Squeeze. Musical career Born in Greenwich, London, Difford has written lyrics for over 40 years, most notably in partnership with Glenn Tilbrook. The two were primary members in Squeeze and Difford & Tilbrook. According to Difford, he stole 50p from his mother's purse to put a card in a local sweetshop window advertising for a guitarist to join his band, although he did not have one at the time. Tilbrook was the only person who responded to the advert and they met for the first time shortly afterwards. Stephen Thomas Erlewine (; born June 18, 1973) is an American music critic and senior editor for the online music database AllMusic. He is the author of many artist biographies and record reviews for AllMusic, as well as a freelance writer, occasionally contributing liner notes. Erlewine was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and is a nephew of the former musician and AllMusic founder Michael Erlewine. Yolanda Charles
Yolande Christina Charles is a British musician and teacher. She has played bass guitar with Paul Weller, David A. Stewart, Robbie Williams, Mick Jagger, The Waterboys, Hans Zimmer and from July 2017 through early 2020 she was a member of Squeeze. She also plays with her own band, The Deep Mo. Charles has been playing professionally since 1989. In 1993, she was part of the house band on the short-lived TV show ''Saturday Zoo''. She released an EP in 2009 and an album in 2011 with the Deep Mo, and continues to perform both with the band and on solo acoustic shows. She has also been involved in teaching, including running classes at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.
