''The King of Whys'' is the ninth studio album by Chicago musician Mike Kinsella under the moniker Owen. Announced on May 25, 2016, the record was released on July 29, 2016. The album was recorded at April Base Studios in Eau Claire, WI. The first single, "Lost", was released via NPR on May 25, 2016. Kinsella collaborated with S. Owen (musician)
Owen is a solo project of Mike Kinsella, and part of the Chicago, Illinois indie rock scene. Kinsella is one of the dominant and influential figures in the Chicago indie scene, having also led the band American Football, and played in the bands Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs and Owls, and most recently Their / They're / There. Owen is known for its soft melodies, complex acoustics, combining lead acoustics with keyboard and other guitars, plaintive vocals and drums. It can be seen as a natural progression for Kinsella, from the progressive and experimental severity of Joan of Arc via the more melodic-progressive American Football. Career Owen's debut, ''Owen'' was a stark departure from previous Mike Kinsella projects. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. It was released on June 19, 2020 under Polyvinyl Record Co Polyvinyl Record Co. is an American independent record label headquartered in Champaign, Illinois. Mike Kinsella
Mike Kinsella (born March 4, 1977) is an American musician and singer-songwriter. Having been involved in many Illinois-based bands, he is best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the emo band American Football. Kinsella's first musical project was serving as drummer for the band Cap'n Jazz, which he co-founded with his brother Tim. With either Tim and/or cousin Nate Kinsella, he has also participated in the projects Owls and Joan of Arc.
