The King Charles Troupe
The King Charles Troupe (KCT or the KCs) is an American group of unicycling and basketball playing circus performers. In 1969, they became the first major African American circus act in modern American circus. Early history and the Ringlings The King Charles Troupe, created by Jerry King, hails from the Bronx, New York. A unicycle enthusiast all his life, Mr. King taught his son, Charles, age 6, how to ride a unicycle in the hallway of their apartment building. Kids from the neighborhood soon demanded lessons and the unique one-wheel club was formed. While practicing in Crotona Park, a basketball rolled over to one of the guys ( Albert Owens). He picked it up on his unicycle and shot it into the hoop, thus the idea of basketball on unicycle was born. The name of the troupe was originally called the Charles Riders, for branding purposes it was later changed to the King Charles Troupe by business manager Bill Minson. New Frontier Hotel And Casino
The New Frontier (formerly Hotel Last Frontier and The Frontier) was a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The property began as a casino and dance club known as Pair O' Dice, opened in 1931. It was sold in 1941, and incorporated into the Hotel Last Frontier, which began construction at the end of the year. The Hotel Last Frontier opened on October 30, 1942, as the second resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The western-themed property included 105 rooms, as well as the Little Church of the West. The resort was devised by R.E. Griffith and designed by his nephew, William J. Moore. Following Griffith's death in 1943, Moore took over ownership and added a western village in 1948. UniverSoul Circus
The UniverSoul Circus is a single ring circus, established in 1994 by Cedric Walker and Calvin "Casual Cal" Dupree, an African-American man who had a vision of creating a circus with a large percentage of people of color performing. He began searching for people from all around the world with incredible talents. It is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. History The UniverSoul Circus was founded in 1994. The history section of the official website states that "We had the idea to present ... to a wide demographic of spectators." Recruiting, training and production began in 1993. The first performance took place in 1994 in the parking lot of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, a couple of years before the stadium closed and demolished the following year. Skeeter Reece
Zachary "Skeeter" Reece (born ) is an American clown. He became a clown after serving in the Vietnam War. Early life Reece was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, and raised in the Bronx in New York City. His parents were Amos, a construction worker, and Ella Mae, who worked in the public school system. They had five children. His grandmother nicknamed him "Skeeter" since he was small as newborn. He spent his childhood in both cities, describing his life in St. Petersburg as "pre-Civil rights movement, civil rights... all Black people... very Racial segregation in the United States, segregated." A circus is a company of performers who put on diverse entertainment shows that may include clowns, acrobats, trained animals, trapeze acts, musicians, dancers, hoopers, tightrope walkers, jugglers, magicians, ventriloquists, and unicyclists as well as other object manipulation and stunt-oriented artists. The term ''circus'' also describes the performance which has followed various formats through its 250-year modern history. Although not the inventor of the medium, Philip Astley is credited as the father of the modern circus.
