The John Maclean March
''The John MacLean March'' is a Scottish song written by Hamish Henderson in 1948. It eulogises the socialist organiser John Maclean, describing his funeral procession through Glasgow in 1923. Background John Maclean was a prominent socialist leader in early-20th century Glasgow, a key figure in the Red Clydeside movement, and sometimes described as the "Scottish Lenin". By the time of the First World War, he had moved towards revolutionary socialism, and strongly opposed the war as imperialist. He was imprisoned in 1916, released in 1917, and named as the Scottish consul for the revolutionary Bolshevik government in early 1918. In April 1918 he was arrested for sedition, convicted and imprisoned, then released again after the Armistice following a hunger strike. Hamish Henderson
Hamish Scott Henderson (11 November 1919 – 9 March 2002) was a Scottish poet, songwriter, communist, intellectual and soldier. He was a catalyst for the folk revival in Scotland. He was also an accomplished folk song collector and discovered such notable performers as Jeannie Robertson, Flora MacNeil and Calum Johnston. Early life Born on the first Armistice Day 11 November 1919, to a single mother, Janet Henderson, a Queen's Nurse who had served in France, then working in the war hospital at Blair Castle. Though he was born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Henderson spent his early years in nearby Glen Shee and eventually moved to England with his mother. "Scotland the Brave" ( gd, Alba an Àigh) is a Scottish patriotic song, one of three often considered an unofficial Scottish national anthem (the others being "Flower of Scotland", and "Scots Wha Hae"). ''Tonight at Noon'' is an album of music by the jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus. It was released through Atlantic Records in July 1964. It compiles tracks recorded at two sessions – the 1957 sessions for the album entitled '' The Clown'' and the 1961 sessions for '' Oh Yeah''. These tracks have since been added to the CD re-releases of their respective albums as bonus tracks. Dick Gaughan
Richard Peter Gaughan (born 17 May 1948) is a Scottish musician, singer and songwriter, particularly of folk and social protest songs. He is regarded as one of Scotland's leading singer-songwriters. Early years Gaughan was born in Glasgow's Royal Maternity Hospital while his father was working in Glasgow as an engine driver. He spent the first year-and-a-half of his life in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, after which the whole family moved to Leith, a port on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The eldest of three children, Gaughan grew up surrounded by the music of both Scotland and Ireland. The Clutha
The Clutha were a traditional Scottish band hailing from Glasgow, that released a small number of albums in the 1970s. The line-up on the Clutha's first album, ''Scotia'' (1971), was John Eaglesham (vocal, concertina), Erlend Voy (fiddle, concertina, vocals), Calum Allan (fiddle), Ronnie Alexander (vocals, guitar) and Gordeanna McCulloch (vocals). The same band members are credited on their 1974 album, ''Scots Ballads Songs & Dance Tunes''. By the time of their 1977 release, ''The Bonnie Mill Dams'', Jimmy Anderson had joined the group on chamber pipes and bagpipes, and Eaglesham had left the group. Edinburgh People's Festival
The Edinburgh People's Festival is an arts festival and labour festival in Edinburgh, Scotland which is intended as a celebration of indigenous talent and cultural entertainment at venues across the city, especially in the outer schemes at prices everyone can afford. It is inspired by the 1945 Labour Government which established the Edinburgh Festival to be a celebration of the arts 'for the people, by the people'. The festival was re-established in 2002 by Colin Fox, who was later elected to parliament as a Lothian MSP in reaction to high ticket prices at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the lack of events away from the city centre. The British folk revival incorporates a number of movements for the collection, preservation and performance of folk music in the United Kingdom and related territories and countries, which had origins as early as the 18th century. It is particularly associated with two movements, usually referred to as the first and second revivals, respectively in the late 19th to early 20th centuries and the mid-20th century. Sydney Goodsir Smith
Sydney Goodsir Smith (26 October 1915 – 15 January 1975) was a New Zealand-born Scottish poet, artist, dramatist and novelist. He wrote poetry in literary Scots often referred to as Lallans (Lowlands dialect), and was a major figure of the Scottish Renaissance. Life He was born in Wellington, New Zealand, the son of Catherine Goodsir Gelenick and Sydney Smith, a pioneer in forensic science who later became a Regius Professor in forensic medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Hugh MacDiarmid
Christopher Murray Grieve (11 August 1892 – 9 September 1978), best known by his pen name Hugh MacDiarmid (), was a Scottish poet, journalist, essayist and political figure. He is considered one of the principal forces behind the Scottish Renaissance and has had a lasting impact on Scottish culture and politics. He was a founding member of the National Party of Scotland in 1928 but left in 1933 due to his Marxist–Leninist views.
