The Jack DeJohnette Piano Album
''The Jack DeJohnette Piano Album'' is an album by Jack DeJohnette with Eddie Gómez and Freddie Waits recorded in 1985 and released on the Landmark label. This is DeJohnette's first album playing piano exclusively, rather than his more familiar drums. Reception The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow states "This album was a surprise when it was released for it features drummer Jack DeJohnette exclusively on piano and synthesizer in a trio... DeJohnette on a couple of the tunes was among the very first pianists to really capture the sound of Thelonious Monk. Other selections are more in his own style and he displays a strong technique that does not sound like the work of a drummer who is moonlighting... Worth checking out.".Yanow, S. Allmusic Reviewaccessed 10 September 2009 Track listing All compositions by Jack DeJohnette except where noted # "Minority" ( Gigi Gryce) - 8:32 # "Lydia" - 3:46 # "Countdown" ( John Coltrane) - 2:38 # "Spiral" (Coltrane) - 7:03 # " Time After Tim ...

A synthesizer (also spelled synthesiser) is an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals. Synthesizers typically create sounds by generating waveforms through methods including subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis and frequency modulation synthesis. These sounds may be altered by components such as filters, which cut or boost frequencies; envelopes, which control articulation, or how notes begin and end; and low-frequency oscillators, which modulate parameters such as pitch, volume, or filter characteristics affecting timbre. Synthesizers are typically played with keyboards or controlled by sequencers, software or other instruments, and may be synchronized to other equipment via MIDI. Synthesizer-like instruments emerged in the United States in the mid-20th century with instruments such as the RCA Mark II Sound Synthesizer, RCA Mark II, which was controlled with Punched card, punch cards and used hundreds of vacuum tubes. Gigi Gryce
Gigi Gryce (born George General Grice Jr.; November 28, 1925 – March 14, 1983), later Basheer Qusim, was an American jazz saxophonist, flautist, clarinetist, composer, arranger, and educator. While his performing career was relatively short, much of his work as a player, composer, and arranger was quite influential and well-recognized during his time. However, Gryce abruptly ended his jazz career in the 1960s. This, in addition to his nature as a very private person, has resulted in very little knowledge of Gryce today. Several of his compositions have been covered extensively (" Minority", "Social Call", "Nica's Tempo") and have become minor jazz standards. Gryce's compositional bent includes harmonic choices similar to those of contemporaries Benny Golson, Tadd Dameron and Horace Silver. Gryce's playing, arranging, and composing are most associated with the classic hard bop era (roughly 1953–1965). He was a well-educated composer and musician, and wrote some classical work ...
