The Independent (Newfoundland)
''The Independent'' is an online newspaper covering news, opinions and local events, trends, and issues in Newfoundland and Labrador. The original weekly (paper) version of The Independent was founded in 2001. The online version was launched in February 2011. Organization and perception ''The Independent'' is edited by Drew Brown; it was previously operated by Justin Brake. In 2012, author and academic Maura Hanrahan published a paper in Native Studies Review that stated "The Independent is considered the most progressive newspaper in the province f Newfoundland and Labrador History ''The Independent'' was a weekly print newspaper that switched to online. Reporter and editor Justin Brake was arrested while covering the Muskrat Falls protests in 2016, prompting condemnation from the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression and the Canadian Association of Journalists in 2017. Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. Justin Brake
Justin Brake is a Canadian journalist who works for APTN National News and Newfoundland's The Independent. While working at The Independent, covering protests at Muskrat Falls, Brake was arrested. His arrest was condemned by press-freedom groups and his reporting won him the 2018 Press Freedom Award. Charges were dropped in 2019. Caitlin Maura Hanrahan (born 1963) is a Canadian author and academic. Hanrahan is Board of Governors Research Chair and associate professor at University of Lethbridge and an adjunct professor with Memorial University's Environmental Policy Institute. She is an acclaimed scholar and author of eleven books in several genres, including the Canadian best-seller ''Tsunami'', which tells the story of a 1929 natural catastrophe caused by tsunami in Newfoundland. The book received the Heritage and History Award and was short-listed for the 2005 Newfoundland and Labrador Book Award for Non-fiction. Lower Churchill Project
The Lower Churchill Project is an ongoing hydroelectric project in the Labrador region of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, to develop the remaining 35 per cent of the Churchill River that was not developed by the Churchill Falls Generating Station. The station at Muskrat Falls will have a capacity of over 824 MW and provide 4.9 TWh of electricity per year. A $6.2 billion deal between Newfoundland and Labrador's Nalcor Energy and Halifax, Nova Scotia-based Emera to develop the project was announced in November 2010. On November 30, 2012, a federal loan guarantee deal for financing of the project was signed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale and Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter. Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is a Canadian non-governmental organization supported by Canadian journalists and advocates of freedom of expression. ''APTN National News'' is a Canadian television national news program broadcast by the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
