''The Importance of Being Earnest'' is a 1957 Australian TV performance of the 1895 play by Oscar Wilde. It was directed by Paul O'Loughlin. It was made at a time when Australian drama production was rare. It aired on 18 December 1957 and starred Margo Lee and Richard Meikle. It was the longest running Australian-made drama to have aired on Australian TV until that time, beating the record set by ''Sound of Thunder'' (78 mins). ''The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People'' is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian morality, Victorian ways. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 185430 November 1900) was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s. Paul O'Loughlin was an Australian actor and director. He directed some of the first television plays in Australia. He joined the ABC in the 1930s. He directed numerous stage plays. He was born and educated in Melbourne and worked in Brisbane and Adelaide. O'Loughlin served in the RAAF in WWII and married Maiva Drummond in 1942. Richard Meikle
Richard Meikle (10 October 1929 – 2 June 1991) was an Australian actor who worked extensively in film, theatre, and radio. He was the father of writer Sam Meikle. Career Meikle began his career as a stage actor. His first recorded role was in Metropolitan Theatre's production of ''Ned Kelly'' in 1947. In the 1950s, Meikle moved into radio acting, most prominently with Grace Gibson Radio Productions. Meikle's voice landed him many major roles with the company as both an actor and an announcer. Meikle was included in Reg James' list of his favourite Grace Gibson performances for his starring role alongside John Unicomb in the serial ''Becket''. Another factor working in Meikle's favour was his ability and desire to perform his own sound effects. Grace Gibson Productions' budget did not cover a professional sound effects person and as such actors who could do effects themselves were highly sought after. Thelma May Afford (née Thomas) (1 December 1907 – 21 August 1996) was an Australian costume designer, theatre performer, and fashion journalist who worked in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. Biography Early years Afford was born Thelma Thomas in Broken Hill, New South Wales to William James Thomas and Ethel (née Henderson) in 1907.
