''The Illustrated Science and Invention Encyclopedia'' was an encyclopedia of books originally published in parts in the United Kingdom under the title ''How It Works'', by Marshall Cavendish Limited, and republished in the United States in 1974 by H.S. Stuttman Publishers in Westport, Connecticut Westport is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States, along the Long Island Sound within Connecticut's Gold Coast. It is northeast of New York City. The town had a population of 27,141 according to the 2020 U.S. Census. History ..., in 21 volumes (OCLC 3643238). It was supplanted by their ''The New Illustrated Science and Invention Encyclopedia: How It Works'', a 28 volume set edited by Donald Clarke and Mark Dartford, published in 1987 () (OCLC 1333004714), and then republished in 28 volumes from 1989 to 1993 (),(OCLC 28822057). Marshall Cavendish
Marshall Cavendish is a subsidiary company of Times Publishing Group, the printing and publishing subsidiary of Singapore-based conglomerate Fraser and Neave (which in turn currently owned by ThaiBev, the beverage company in Thailand), and at present is a publisher of books, business directories and magazines. Westport is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States, along the Long Island Sound within Connecticut's Gold Coast. It is northeast of New York City. The town had a population of 27,141 according to the 2020 U.S. Census. History The earliest known inhabitants of the Westport area as identified through archaeological finds date back 7,500 years. Records from the first white settlers report the Pequot Indians living in the area which they called ''Machamux'' translated by the colonialists as ''beautiful land''. Settlement by colonialists dates back to the five ''Bankside Farmers''; whose families grew and prospered into a community that continued expanding.
