''The House Under the Water'' is a British historical television drama series which originally aired on BBC One in eight parts during 1961.Baskin p.54 It is an adaptation of the 1932 novel '' The House Under the Water'' by Francis Brett Young, which portrays the late nineteenth century flooding of the Elan Valley in Wales to create a water supply for the rapidly growing city of Birmingham. All eight episodes are now considered to be lost. ''The House Under the Water'' is a 1932 novel by the British writer Francis Brett Young.Cannadine p.161 It is one of his "Mercian novels", set in the West Midlands and Welsh borders. It portrays the construction of the Elan Valley Reservoirs to provide a water supply for the rapidly expanding Birmingham, requiring the flooding of a significant area of land. This included a house associated with the poet Shelley, which is referred to in the novel's title. William Squire
William Squire (29 April 1917 – 3 May 1989) was a Welsh actor of stage, film and television. Squire was born in Neath, Glamorgan, the son of William Squire and his wife Martha (née Bridgeman). Career As a stage actor, Squire performed at Stratford-upon-Avon and at the Old Vic, and notably replaced his fellow-countryman Richard Burton as King Arthur in ''Camelot'' at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway. Early life Rees was born on 27 April 1928 in Abergavenny, Wales. Career Rees's early career in television series and shows in character and bit parts, often playing a police officer.
