''The Hoosier Schoolmaster: A Story of Backwoods Life in Indiana'' is an 1871 novel by the American author Edward Eggleston. The novel originated from a series of stories written for ''Hearth and Home'', a periodical edited by Eggleston, and was based on the experiences of his brother, George Cary Eggleston, who had been a schoolteacher in Indiana. The novel is noted for its realistic depictions of 19th-century American rural life and for its use of local dialect. Evaluation In the conclusion to ''The Hoosier Schoolmaster'', Eggleston announces his belief that readers whose taste is not perverted always want a story to “come out well.” Accordingly, he so planned this his first and most important romance that the lovers are all happily united, the poor orphans become prosperous and the evil-doers receive just punishment, mitigated somewhat through the generous intervention of those whom they have wronged. Edwin August Phillip von der Butz (November 10, 1883 – March 4, 1964) was an American actor, director, and screenwriter of the silent era. August was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated from Christian Brothers College there. He acted in stock theater as leading man at the Imperial Theater in St. Louis. He went on to act on stage in New York. He appeared on Broadway in ''Mr. and Mrs. Daventry'' (1910). He appeared in more than 150 films between 1909 and 1947. He also directed 52 films between 1912 and 1919. He co-founded Eaco Films in 1914. He wrote novels under the pen name Montague Lawrence. August died in Hollywood, California. His grave is located at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood. Max Figman And Lolita Robertson
Max Figman (March 9, 1866 – February 13, 1952), born in Vienna, Austria, and Lolita Robertson (March 7, 1888 – May 1, 1959) born in San Francisco, were a husband and wife acting duo who appeared on Broadway and in silent films together. Max was also a director and writer in his stage career. Max was 22 years Lolita's senior but the couple was long married and devoted to each other until Max's death in 1952. Max died on February 13, 1952, in a nursing home in Bayside, Queens, called Edgewater Rest, at the age of 85. They had two children, Max Jr. and Lolita Figman. Max and Lolita appeared in a hit play ''Fine Feathers'' in 1913 co-starring Wilton Lackaye and Robert Edeson. They made a few films with the short-lived Masterpiece Film Manufacturing Company. The couple sat in on the formation of The Lasky Company in 1914, later to be Paramount Pictures. In silent pictures, the husband and wife often appeared together. ''The Hoosier Schoolmaster'' is a 1924 American silent drama film directed by Oliver L. Sellers and starring Henry Hull, Jane Thomas, and Frank Dane. It is an adaptation of the novel '' The Hoosier Schoolmaster'' by Edward Eggleston. The film was remade as a post-Civil War talkie in 1935. Plot As described in a film magazine review, during pre-Civil War days, Ralph Hartsook is the headmaster in the Flat Creek School District of Indiana. Hannah Thompson works for the family where Ralph boards. They fall in love. An epidemic of night robberies breaks out and Ralph is suspected of being the criminal.
