The Homeplace (Land Between The Lakes)
The Homeplace is a historic home and farm complex located at Madison, Madison County, Virginia. The original house was built about 1830, and is a gable-roofed hall-and- parlor building with a rear shed addition, built of frame over a stone basement. It was extensively enlarged about 1875 by the addition of a two-story wing built on an I-house plan. Madison is a town in Madison County, Virginia, United States. The population was 229 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Madison County. History The Hebron Lutheran Church, The Homeplace, James City Historic District, Madison County Courthouse, Madison County Courthouse Historic District, and Woodbourne are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km2), all of it land. Transportation The main highways serving Madison are U.S. Route 29 Business and Virginia State Route 231. Through the entirety of their trip through the town, both highways follow Main Street. US 29 Bus is the old alignment of U.S. Route 29, which now bypasses the town just to the southeast. US 29 extends southwest towards Charlottesville and northeast towards Washington, D.C. Madison County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,837. Its county seat is Madison. History Madison County was established in December 1792, created from Culpeper County. The county is named for the Madison family that owned land along the Rapidan River. President James Madison is a descendant of that family. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (0.4%) is water. A significant portion of western Madison County is within Shenandoah National Park, including Hawksbill Mountain, the highest point in both the park and in Madison County, Old Rag Mountain, one of the park's most popular tourist destinations, and Rapidan Camp, the presidential retreat built by Herbert Hoover. I-house
The I-house is a vernacular house type, popular in the United States from the colonial period onward. The I-house was so named in the 1930s by Fred Kniffen, a cultural geographer at Louisiana State University who was a specialist in folk architecture. He identified and analyzed the type in his 1936 study of Louisiana house types.
