The Hole (1957 Film)
a.k.a. ''Hole in One'' a.k.a. ''The Pit'', is a 1957 black-and-white comedy/mystery Japanese film directed by Kon Ichikawa. Plot A reporter, Nagako Kita (Machiko Kyō), is fired for writing about police corruption. To make money, she hides while a weekly magazine publishes photos of her, and offers a prize to the person who discovers her. A group of three bank embezzlers, So Yamamura, Eiji Funakoshi, and Sotoji Mukui ( Fujio Harumoto) employ Mukui's younger sister Fukiko as a fake employee at the bank and plan to make her disappear when the real woman appears again and blame the crime on her. When she contacts Mukui about the crime, she finds him dead and Fukiko pulls a gun on her. She contacts the policeman who was fired, who is now a private detective. Machiko Kyō
was a Japanese actress who was active primarily in the 1950s. Early life and education Kyō, an only child, was born in Osaka in 1924. Her father left when she was five years old, and she was raised by her mother and grandmother. She adopted Machiko Kyō as her stage name when she entered the Osaka Shochiku Kagekidan in 1936 at age 12. She trained as a revue dancer before entering the film industry through Daiei Film in 1949. Two years later, she achieved international fame as the female lead in Akira Kurosawa's film ''Rashomon'', which won first prize at the Venice Film Festival and stunned audiences with its nonlinear narrative. Career Kyō starred in many more Japanese productions, including Kenji Mizoguchi's ''Ugetsu'' (1953), Teinosuke Kinugasa's '' Gate of Hell'' (1953), Kon Ichikawa's ''Odd Obsession'' (1959), and Yasujirō Ozu's ''Floating Weeds'' (1959). Tanie Kitabayashi
was a Japanese actress and voice actress. Born Reiko Ando in Tokyo, she began as a stage actress. Kitabayashi was a founding member of the famed Mingei Theatre Company, founded in 1950. Early in her career, she became well known for portraying older women. In 1960, she won best actress awards at the 10th Blue Ribbon Awards and at the Mainichi Film Awards for ''Kiku to Isamu''. She also won the Japan Academy Prize for best actress in ''Rainbow Kids'' (1991), a film that also earned her honors from the Mainichi Film Awards and from ''Kinema Junpo''. She died on April 27, 2010, of pneumonia at a Tokyo hospital. She was 98.
