The High Sun
''The High Sun'' ( hr, Zvizdan) is a 2015 Croatian drama film directed by Dalibor Matanić. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival winning the Jury Prize. It is the first Croatian film to be screened at Cannes since the country's independence in 1991. The film was selected as the Croatian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards but it was not nominated. Dalibor Matanić (, born 21 January 1975) is a Croatian filmmaker. His most well-known film is the 2002 feature ''Fine Dead Girls'' which won the Special Jury Prize at the 2003 Sochi film festival. His 2015 film ''The High Sun'' was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Jury Prize. He is married to Helena Minić and they have two children. Independent Croatia has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1992. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was introduced for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. Since achieving independence from Yugoslavia, Croatia has submitted 30 films for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film , but none have been nominated for an Oscar. This is a list of submissions to the 88th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. Nine shortlisted contenders were revealed a week before the announcement of the Oscar nominations. Slavko Sobin
Slavko Sobin (born 13 November 1984 in Split) is a Croatian actor. Biography At 18 Sobin moved to Los Angeles to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he graduated in 2007. Upon his return to Croatia, he moved to Zagreb and works as a freelance artist in several theaters: Merlin Theatre, Open University of Velika Gorica, and DK Dubrava. In 2009 his first return to Split with the play 'Here he writes about the title of the drama Anti' in him, but now the theater GKM, and 'Fisherman fights' in the National Theatre in Split. In 2015, he played a Meereenese fighter in the ''Game of Thrones'' episode "Sons of the Harpy." Alongside Bojana Gregorić, Sobin hosted the 2019 Croatian Theatre Awards. Trpimir Jurkić
Trpimir I (, la, Trepimerus/Trepimero) was a duke ( hr, knez) in Croatia from around 845 until his death in 864. He is considered the founder of the Trpimirović dynasty that ruled in Croatia, with interruptions, from around 845 until 1091. Although he was formally vassal of the Frankish Emperor Lothair I, Trpimir used Frankish-Byzantine conflicts to rule on his own. Reign Trpimir succeeded Croatia's Duke Mislav around 845, ascended the throne in Klis and expanded the early Roman stronghold into Klis Fortress, the capital of his domain. Trpimir battled successfully against his neighbours, the Byzantine coastal cities under the strategos of Zadar in 846. In 854 he repulsed an attack by an army of the Bulgarian Khan Boris I and concluded a peace treaty with him, exchanging gifts. The Bulgarians and Croatians coexisted peacefully after that time.
