The Heavenly Play

	The Heavenly Play ''The Heavenly Play'' ( sv, Himlaspelet) is a 1942 Swedish drama film directed by Alf Sjöberg. Plot The young peasants Mats and Marit are about to marry when a disease breaks out in their village. Marit gets accused of being a witch and sentenced to death. After she has been burnt alive Mats leaves the village and seeks a way to make God sending Marit back from heaven onto earth. He fails and loses his personal integrity. Marlit has to ask God to intervene before the devil can take Mats. God shows mercy by reuniting Mats and Marit in heaven. 	Alf Sjöberg Sven Erik Alf Sjöberg (21 June 1903 – 17 April 1980) was a Sweden, Swedish theatre director, theatre and film director. He won the Palme d'Or, Grand Prix du Festival at the Cannes Film Festival twice: in 1946 for ''Torment (1944 film), Torment'' ( sv, Hets) (part of an eleven-way tie), and in 1951 for his film ''Miss Julie (1951 film), Miss Julie'' ( sv, Fröken Julie) (an adaptation of August Strindberg's play which tied with Vittorio De Sica's ''Miracle in Milan''). Despite his success with those films, Sjöberg was foremost a stage director, perhaps the greatest at Dramaten (alongside first Olof Molander and later Ingmar Bergman). He was a First Director of Sweden's Royal Dramatic Theatre between 1930 and 1980; he staged there many remarkable and historic productions. Sjöberg was also a pioneer director of drama for early Swedish TV (his 1955 TV production of ''Hamlet'' is a national milestone). 	Anita Björk Anita Björk (25 April 1923 – 24 October 2012) was a Swedish actress. She was born in Tällberg, Dalarna and attended the Royal Dramatic Training Academy from 1942 to 1945. She was a leading lady of Swedish theatre for many years and worked on the national stage Dramaten from 1945 onwards and played more than 100 roles over the years (which makes her one of the greatest actors of Dramaten). 	Björn Berglund Björn Berglund (16 October 1904 – 3 August 1968) was a Swedish stage and film and television actor. Biography Björn Nils Johan Gustaf Berglund was born in Jörn, Västerbotten County. He began his career in cinema in the 1939 Edvin Adolphson-directed musical film ''Säg det i toner'' (English release title: ''The Dream Waltz'') starring Håkan Westergren and Stina Berg.
