The Climbers (1919 Film)
''The Climbers'' is a 1919 American silent comedy-drama film produced and distributed by the Vitagraph Company of America. It is based on Clyde Fitch's 1901 Broadway play. This film was directed by Tom Terriss and stars Corinne Griffith. A previous version of Fitch's play had been made in 1915 as '' The Climbers'' with Gladys Hanson and a later version in 1927 again as '' The Climbers'' with Irene Rich. A print is preserved in the Library of Congress. Plot In order to keep his social-climbing wife and daughters in the lifestyle they are accustomed to, wealthy George Hunter makes some large investments in the stock market, but the stocks crash and he loses a great deal of money. His wealthy aunt offers to bail the family out, but complications ensue. Larry Semon
Lawrence Semon (February 9, 1889 – October 8, 1928) was an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter during the silent film era. In his day, Semon was considered a major movie comedian, but he is now remembered mainly for working with both Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy before they started working together. He is also sometimes noted for directing (as well as appearing in) the 1925 silent film '' The Wizard of Oz'', which had a slight influence on the better-known 1939 talkie '' The Wizard of Oz'' released by MGM. The film was included in the 2005 three-disc DVD version of the 1939 film, along with other silent ''Oz'' movies. Early life Born in West Point, Mississippi, Semon was the son of a travelling Jewish vaudeville magician Zera Semon, who billed himself as "Zera the Great". Lucille Carlisle (August 31, 1895 – October 19, 1958), born Ida Lucile White, was an American actress. Early life Ida Lucile White was born in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of Frank White and Della Pope White. Both parents were born in Canada. In childhood, she moved to Spokane, Washington, with her family. Career After winning a beauty contest sponsored by ''Photoplay'' magazine, and a brief career on stage, Carlisle began making silent films for Vitagraph Studios, with comedian and director Larry Semon. Together they made 25 films. After their professional and personal relationship ended, she also left film work. She was heard on radio in the 1930s and 1940s, representing Mothers of America, an anti-war organization.
