The Gymslips
The Gymslips were an English all-female punk rock, punk band from London, England, active in the early 1980s. Career The original band of Suzanne Scott (bassist / vocalist), Paula Richards (guitarist / vocalist) and Karen Yarnell (drummer) got together in 1980, but first played as The Gymslips in August 1981. The band supported the Dolly Mixture on a UK tour. They contributed the song "Midnight City" to all-female compilation LP, ''Making Waves''. A tour supporting the Androids of Mu and Rock Goddess followed. In the spring of 1982 they recorded their first of five sessions for John Peel after which they signed to Abstract Records. Their first single "48 Crash" (a cover of the Suzi Quatro hit) was released in November 1982, and the follow-up "Big Sister" was released at the beginning of 1983. Serious Drinking were an English humorous punk rock band from Norwich, England, whose lyrical themes often covered football and drinking. History The band formed in February 1981, taking their name from a ''Sounds'' headline to an interview with The Cockney Rejects, with most members having met at the University of East Anglia. Band members were Martin Ling (vocals), Eugene Rodgers (vocals), Andy Hearnshaw (guitar, formerly of The Farmer's Boys), Jem Moore (bass), Pete Saunders (keyboards) also known from Dexys Midnight Runners and Lance Dunlop (drums). John Robert Parker Ravenscroft (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004), known professionally as John Peel, was an English disc jockey (DJ) and radio presenter. He was the longest-serving of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004. Peel was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio. Susan Kay Quatro (born June 3, 1950) is an American singer, bass guitarist, songwriter, and actress. "48 Crash" is Suzi Quatro's third solo single and was released after " Can the Can". It was included on her debut album ''Suzi Quatro'' (known as ''Can the Can'' in Australia). It later appeared as a track on her 1995 album ''What Goes Around''. The single peaked at number three in the UK in July 1973, and number one in Australia for one week. It also hit number two in Germany, and charted well in other European countries. Background This Quatro's third solo single was released after she moved from the United States to Britain. In the United States she had already released two singles with all-female band The Pleasure Seekers. The song "48 Crash" was written and produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn.
