The Green Monocle
''The Green Monocle'' (German: ''Das grüne Monokel'') is a 1929 German silent crime film directed by Rudolf Meinert and starring Ralph Clancy, Betty Bird and Suzy Vernon. The film was based on a novel by Guido Kreutzer. It features the fictional detective Stuart Webbs, one of several German fictional characters inspired by Sherlock Holmes, who had appeared in a series of silent films during the 1910s and 1920s.Prawer p.88 It was shot at the Tempelhof Studios in Berlin with location shooting in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main as well as Basel and Montreux in Switzerland. Rudolf Meinert
Rudolf Meinert (1882–6 March 1943) was an Austrian screenwriter, film producer and film director, director. Meinert was born Rudolf Bürstein in Vienna, but worked for most of his career in the Cinema of Germany, German film industry. He became well-established as the producer/director of silent film, silent crime films. In the immediate post-First World War period, Meinert was head of production at the German studio Decla after his own production unit Meinert-Film was taken over by the larger outfit. Meinert, rather than Erich Pommer, is sometimes credited as the producer behind Decla's revolutionary ''The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'' (1920). Following the Nazi takeover of power in Germany, Meinert, who was Jewish, went into exile in the Netherlands, however he returned to Austria. He moved to France in 1937 and live there until he was caught, sent to Drancy internment camp and transported to Majdanek concentration camp on 6 March 1943, where he died. Crime films, in the broadest sense, is a film genre inspired by and analogous to the crime fiction literary genre. Films of this genre generally involve various aspects of crime and its detection. Erwin Scharf (art Director)
Erwin Scharf (1901–1972) was an Austrian art director. He worked in the German film industry during the Weimar Era, often collaborating with Robert Neppach on set designs. Because of his Jewish heritage he left Germany following the Nazi takeover in 1933, and spent the next five years working in a variety of European countries. This included the 1937 Carol Reed-directed film '' Who's Your Lady Friend?'' in Britain.Evans p.173 In 1938 he settled in the United States. Robert Neppach
Robert Neppach (2 March 1890 – 18 August 1939) was an Austrian architect, film producer and art director. Neppach worked from 1919 in the German film industry. He oversaw the art direction of over 80 films during his career, including F.W. Murnau's '' Desire'' (1921) and Richard Oswald's '' Lucrezia Borgia'' (1922). In May 1933, his first wife Nelly, a successful tennis player, took her life because of the discrimination and prosecution of Jews in Nazi Germany.
