The Greatest Hits (Texas Album)
''The Greatest Hits'' is a compilation album by Scottish rock band Texas, released on 23 October 2000. It was the band's first greatest hits album, featuring songs spanning their career from 1989 to 2000. Three new singles were also included: "In Demand", " Inner Smile" and " Guitar Song". Two extra bonus tracks appear on the UK edition of the album that do not appear on the international edition. In territories where the group did not chart any major hits, the album was simply renamed ''Song Book''. Four previously released songs (" So in Love with You", " So Called Friend", " Everyday Now" and "Prayer for You") were also re-recorded for this album. ''The Greatest Hits'' peaked at number one in the UK, becoming the band's third album to do so. Texas (band)
Texas are a Scottish alternative rock band from Glasgow. They were founded in 1986 by Johnny McElhone (formerly of the bands Altered Images and Hipsway) and Sharleen Spiteri on lead vocals. Texas made their performing debut in March 1988 at the University of Dundee. They took their name from the 1984 Wim Wenders movie ''Paris, Texas (film), Paris, Texas''. The band released their debut album ''Southside (Texas album), Southside'' in 1989, along with the debut single "I Don't Want a Lover", which was a top-ten hit on the UK Singles Chart and peaked within the top ten of the charts in many other European countries. I Don't Want A Lover
"I Don't Want a Lover" is the debut single of Scottish band Texas, taken from their first album, ''Southside'' (1989). The music starts with blues slide guitar followed by a throbbing rhythm section before the vocals break in. It was released on 23 January 1989 and peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. In 2001, Norwegian production team Stargate remixed and re-released the song to promote '' The Greatest Hits'' compilation album. Released on 9 July 2001, this version peaked at number 16 on the UK chart. Critical reception In an ironic review of 4 February 1989 the Phil Cheeseman, reviewer of British music newspaper ''Record Mirror'', chided the song for lack of individuality. He wrote: "It Begins brightly with some welcome slide guitar work but even before its slide towards American FM rock you're already scouring the sleeve in a vague attempt to find something, anything of interest". Say What You Want
"Say What You Want" is a song by Scottish rock band Texas, written by band members Johnny McElhone and Sharleen Spiteri. It was the first single to be released from the group's fourth studio album, '' White on Blonde'' (1997). Released in January 1997, it is the band's biggest hit commercially, peaking at number three on the UK Singles Chart. As of February 2015 the single has sold 451,000 copies in United Kingdom. The accompanying music video released to promote the single shows lead singer Sharleen Spiteri in a futuristic room. In 1998, Texas collaborated with Wu-Tang Clan members Method Man and RZA to remix the song as "Say What You Want (All Day, Every Day)". This version features Method Man and RZA on vocals and was released as a single in March 1998, peaking at number four on the UK Singles Chart and reaching the top 10 in Iceland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. ''Southside'' is the debut album by Scottish rock band Texas. It was released on 13 March 1989. It peaked at no. 3 in the UK Albums Chart and within three weeks of release was certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry for sales in excess of 100,000 copies. Worldwide, ''Southside'' has sold over 2 million copies. Background and release The album's first single "I Don't Want a Lover" was released on 23 January 1989 and peaked at no. 8 in the UK Singles Chart. Following the release of the album in March of that year, which entered the UK Albums Chart at no.3, further singles from the album were less successful. The second single, "Thrill Has Gone", peaked at no. 60, while a third single, " Everyday Now", fared little better at no. 44. Johnny McElhone
John Francis McElhone (born 21 April 1963 in Glasgow, Scotland) is a Scottish guitarist and songwriter. He has played with three bands who have enjoyed a top-20 presence in the UK Singles Chart; the new wave bands Altered Images and Hipsway, and the alternative/pop rock band Texas. Altered Images and Texas have had top-20 UK Albums Chart hits. McElhone contributed the musical part of co-writing the bulk of Texas's material. He is the son of Scottish Labour MPs Frank and Helen McElhone. Sharleen Eugene Spiteri (born 7 November 1967) is a Scottish singer and guitarist, best known as the lead singer of the rock band Texas. She has a contralto vocal range. In 2013, Texas's worldwide album sales were counted at 40 million records. Texas returned from their hiatus in 2013 with ''The Conversation'', which debuted at No. 4 on the UK Album Chart, No. 3 on their native Scottish Album Charts as well as No. 8 in France.
