The Goblin And The Grocer
"The Goblin at the Grocer's" ( da, Nissen hos Spekhøkeren) is a fairy tale published 1852 by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, about a goblin () who must choose between poetry or his Christmas porridge from a grocer. Andrew Lang included the tale as "The Goblin and the Grocer" in ''The Pink Fairy Book'' (1897). The ''spekhøkeren'' does not mean just "grocer" but a materialistic "Philistine" as well, and he uses pages ripped out of a precious book of poems to wrap merchandise such as cheese. Hence the alternate title "The Goblin and the Huckster". Bibliographical notes The tale "Nissen hos Spækhøkeren" was first published November 30, 1852, and republished several times during the author's lifetime. An English translation of the tale with the title "The Goblin and the Grocer" was included in Andrew Lang's anthology, ''The Pink Fairy Book'' (1897). Lorenz Frølich
Lorenz Frølich (25 October 182025 October 1908) was a Danish painter, illustrator, graphic artist and etcher. Early life and education Frølich was born into a wealthy bourgeouis family in Copenhagen. The son of Johan Jacob Frølich (1777-1858) and Pouline Wilhelmine Tutein (1789-1881). His father owned a successful trading firm in partnership with his brother. His mother was the daughter of Friederich Tutein, another wealthy whole-seller and the Prussian consul in Copenhagen. Frølich's father and uncle owned the building at Store Kongensgade 81. He lived with his parents in the apartment on the first floor. The uncle lived with his wife in the ground-floor apartment. The family belonged to the city's German reformed congregation. Henry Justice Ford
Henry Justice Ford (1860–1941) was a prolific and successful English artist and illustrator, active from 1886 through to the late 1920s. Sometimes known as H. J. Ford or Henry J. Ford, he came to public attention when he provided the numerous beautiful illustrations for Andrew Lang's Fairy Books, which captured the imagination of a generation of British children and were sold worldwide in the 1880s and 1890s. Vilhelm Pedersen
Thomas Vilhelm Pedersen (28 January 1820 – 13 March 1859) was a Danish painter and illustrator who is known for his illustrations for fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. He was the first artist to illustrate Andersen's works. His drawings were converted into wood prints and used in the Danish and German editions. Biography Pedersen was born in Karlslunde. He initially followed in his father's footsteps and became an officer in the Royal Danish Navy. He was interested in drawing and in 1843 Christian VIII granted him four years' paid leave to enable him to pursuit an artistic career. He studied with Wilhelm Marstrand and enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He first exhibited his works 1847 but voluntarily returned to the army at the outbreak of the Three Year War. Hans Christian Harald Tegner, known as Hans Tegner (30 November 1853 – 2 April 1932), was a Danish artist and illustrator.
