''The Glory and Misery of Human Life'' ( fi, Ihmiselon ihanuus ja kurjuus) is a 1988 Finnish drama film directed and written by Matti Kassila starring Lasse Pöysti, Liisamaija Laaksonen and Tuula Nyman. It is based on the novel by F.E. Sillanpää. The film is Jasper Pääkkönen's debut role, when he was seven years old at the time. The film also features Samuli Edelmann in one of his first film roles. Plot The film is starring writer Martti Hongisto (Lasse Pöysti), who goes out to meet Anna (Liisamaija Laaksonen) after loving her youth and reminiscing about his past youth. Meanwhile, Hongisto's wife Laimi (Tuula Nyman) is searching for her husband in restaurants. Matti Kassila
Matti Kassila (12 January 1924 – 13 December 2018) was a Finnish film director who achieved fame as one of the most prominent Finnish filmmakers in the 1950s and 1960s. He is most famous for the series of four Inspector Palmu movies, based on the character created by Mika Waltari. During his long career, he won seven Jussi Awards, including a concrete Jussi for lifetime achievement, and received numerous other commendations. His 1959 film '' Punainen viiva'' was entered into the 1st Moscow International Film Festival. He was also one of the screenwriters for the 1968 film ''Here, Beneath the North Star'', directed by Edvin Laine. Frans Eemil Sillanpää
Frans Eemil Sillanpää (; 16 September 1888 – 3 June 1964) was one of the most famous Finnish writers and in 1939 became the first Finnish writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature "for his deep understanding of his country's peasantry and the exquisite art with which he has portrayed their way of life and their relationship with Nature". His best-known novels include ' (''Nuorena nukkunut'') from 1931. Early life Frans Eemil Sillanpää was born into a peasant farming family in Hämeenkyrö. Although his parents were poor, they managed to send him to school in Tampere. Lasse Pöysti
Lasse Erik Pöysti (24 January 1927 – 5 April 2019) was a Finnish actor, director, theatre manager and writer. He was born in Sortavala. Biography Pöysti began his career as a child actor, becoming known to the Finnish public as Olli Suominen in the "Suominen family" films. The first of these films as '' Suomisen perhe'' (1941). Pöysti was 14 years old at the time of the film. Pöysti matriculated in 1945 in the Helsinki Normal Lyceum. From 1967 to 1974, Pöysti served as manager of the Lilla Teatern, with ex-wife Birgitta Ulfsson, and also acted in many roles in Swedish. During 1974–1981 he was the manager of the Tampere Workers' Theatre, and during 1981–1985 the manager of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. Liisamaija Laaksonen-Kaitue''Kuka kukin on 2007.'' Otava 2006. (born 6 May 1938 in Lahti) is a Finnish actress, who has become famous for her roles in films and television series. She wrote several television shows in the 1990s and 2000s. Biography Laaksonen attended the Helsinki Theatre Academy from 1960 to 1963 and worked as a regular actress of Yle 1963-1998 and since 1998 as a free artist. She has appeared at the Finnish National Theatre, Intimiteatter, Helsinki City Theatre, Finnish National Opera, and Savonlinna Opera Festival. In addition, she has been reading poetry throughout Finland, as well as in Sweden, Germany, the United States, and Canada. Antti Vilho Olavi Litja (21 February 1938 – 13 July 2022) was a Finnish actor. Litja made over 60 film and television appearances since 1959. A prominent figure in Finnish film in the 1970s and 1980s, since the mid-1990s he mostly appeared on television. Joona Jasper Pääkkönen (; born 15 July 1980) is a Finnish film actor and entrepreneur. Following a two-decade-plus career in Finnish movies, Pääkkönen's international breakthrough role came in 2015 in the historical drama television series ''Vikings'' (2016–2018; 2020) as Halfdan the Black. Samuli Casimir Edelmann (born 21 July 1968) is a Finnish actor and singer. Family and career Edelmann was born in Pori, Finland, the son of actress Marja-Leena Kouki and composer Toni Edelmann. Edelmann has two children with his wife, Laura Tuomarila. In the spring of 2006 Samuli Edelmann and his family moved to Malta, and in the late of 2015 Edelmann and his family moved back to Finland. The Jussi Awards are Finland's premier film industry prizes, awarded annually to recognize the achievements of directors, actors, and writers. History The first Jussi Awards ceremony was held on 16 November 1944 at the Restaurant Adlon in Helsinki. The award is one of the oldest films awards in Europe. The original planned name for the prize was ''Aino'', but Jussi won in the end. The name comes from a character in the 1924 and 1936 Pohjalaisia films. The awards were originally organized by the ''Elokuvajournalistit'' organization, but the task was transferred in the early 1960s to the ''Filmiaura'' organization, composed of around 300 members working in the Finnish film industry.
