The Girls (Lansens Novel)
''The Girls'' is the second novel by Canadian novelist and screenwriter Lori Lansens. It was first published in 2005 by Knopf Canada. It is the life story of a pair of conjoined twins, Rose and Ruby Darlen, and is narrated by the twins themselves. Rose, a budding writer, also details key moments from the lives of their adoptive parents, Aunt Lovey and Uncle Stash. The girls are joined at the head (craniopagus), with Rose carrying her physically weaker and smaller sister on her right hip. According to the description of the condition at the start of the book, the girls are estimated to share 100 veins as well as skull bones. However, while their cerebral tissues are meshed, they have distinctly separate brains and so have different personalities. The musical is based on the 2003 film ''Calendar Girls'', which is in turn based on a true story. Synopsis Annie's husband John dies from leukaemia at an early age. Her close friend Chris, wants to purchase a comfortable sofa for the visitors' lounge in the hospital where John was treated. She hits upon the idea of printing a calendar featuring some of the members of the Knapely branch of the Women's Institute, discreetly posing nude while engaged in traditional WI activities, such as baking and knitting, in order to raise funds. The Girls are a new wave/punk pop band from Seattle, Washington that formed in the early 2000s. As of 2012, their members are lead vocalist/frontman Shannon Brown, guitarists Zache Davis and Vas Kumar, bassist Colin Griffiths, keyboardist Derek Mason, and drummer Elie Goral. Their sound has been compared to that of multiple '70's bands, including the Cars and the Voidoids. History The Girls released their self-titled debut album in 2004 on Dirtnap Records; soon afterward, the band fell apart, and every member left except Brown.
