The Girl In The Rumor
''The Girl in the Rumor'' ( ja, 噂の娘, Uwasa no musume) is a 1935 Japanese drama film written and directed by Mikio Naruse. Plot The film opens with a conversation between a barber and his customer about the Nadaya food store across the street which, in their words, is "going downhill" since the former owner Keisaku retired and his son Kenkichi took over. Keisaku starts drinking the store's sake already early in the day, complaining that the sake's quality is decreasing lately. While Kenkichi's more modern daughter Kimiko lives a life of ease, the more traditional Kunie is working in her father's store. Now that his wife has died, Kenkichi offers his mistress Oyo to move into their house, a plan endorsed by Kunie but opposed by Kimiko. Mikio Naruse
was a Japanese filmmaker who directed 89 films spanning the period 1930 to 1967. Naruse is known for imbuing his films with a bleak and pessimistic outlook. He made primarily shomin-geki ("common people drama") films with female protagonists, portrayed by actresses such as Hideko Takamine, Kinuyo Tanaka, and Setsuko Hara. Because of his focus on family drama and the intersection of traditional and modern Japanese culture, his films have been compared with the works of Yasujirō Ozu. Many of his films in his later career were adaptations of the works of acknowledged Japanese writers. Titled a "major figure of Japan's golden age" and "supremely intelligent dramatist", he remains lesser known than his contemporaries Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Ozu. was a Japanese actor. Fujiwara worked regularly and extensively with Akira Kurosawa, and was known for both being adept at comic acting, as well as being able to take on serious roles. Heihachiro Okawa
, also sometimes credited as , was a Japanese film actor active from the 1930s to 1971. With hopes of starting a business, he traveled to the United States in 1923 and studied at Columbia University. He also studied at the Paramount Studios acting school and eventually began working in Hollywood, appearing in films by Howard Hawks and William Wellman. Donald Richie (17 April 1924 – 19 February 2013) was an American-born author who wrote about the Japanese people, the culture of Japan, and especially Japanese cinema.
