The Gemini (2016 Film)
''The Gemini'' () is a 2016 Burmese drama film directed by Nyo Min Lwin, starring Okkar Min Maung, Nyein Chan Kyaw and Aye Myat Thu. The film follows a love story between two men who had faced difficulties in their life after one had been forced into an arranged marriage. The film was the first LGBT film in cinema of Myanmar and openly railed against the Burmese homosexuality laws. The Gemini premiered at the Cinema Village in New York City on 9 September 2016, and became the first Burmese film shown in Hollywood. Plot The film begins with a scene of bed sheets pooling on the floor and two men swing their legs into view. The film cuts to a cold discussion between Thit Wai and his wife, Honey Pyo. Later, Honey Pyo is shattered when she learns that her husband's plane has crashed. Nay Thit approaches the young widow at the funeral claiming to be his college friend. Nyo Min Lwin
Nyo Min Lwin (; born 28 September 1979) is a Burmese film director, scriptwriter and former actor. He is best known for directing the first Myanmar LGBT film ''The Gemini'' (2016) and the first Myanmar sci-fi film ''Ananda: Rise of Notra'' (2019). His career began as an actor in Burmese films and gained success as a director in the early days of his career by directing horror films. Throughout his career, he has acted in over 15 films and directed over 100 films. Early life and education Nyo Min Lwin was born on 28 September 1979 in Yangon, Myanmar. He is the only son of Aung Win, a writer who wrote under the pen name Pike Htwe, and his wife Khin Mya Thi. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in Myanmar face severe challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Okkar Min Maung (; born Ye Htoo Win on 18 September 1985) is a Burmese actor, model, singer and male pageant winner who was crowned Mr. Tourism World 2016 in Manila, the Philippines. He has starred in leading roles in a slew of local productions, from commercials to films, and has catwalked for several fashion events. Early life and education Okkar was born on 18 September 1985 in Yangon, Myanmar to parents Khine Win and Nilar Thein Myint and moved to New York when he was 24.
