''The Gasman'' (german: Der Gasmann) is a 1941 German comedy film directed by Carl Froelich and starring Heinz Rühmann, Anny Ondra and Walter Steinbeck.Bock & Bergfelder p. 347 It was shot at the Tempelhof Studios in Berlin and premiered in the city's Gloria-Palast. The film's sets were designed by Walter Haag. It was made by Froelich's separate production unit, and distributed by the major studio UFA. Carl Froelich
Carl August Hugo Froelich (5 September 1875 – 12 February 1953) was a German film pioneer and film director. He was born and died in Berlin. Biography Apparatus builder and cameraman From 1903 Froelich was a colleague of Oskar Messter, one of the advance guard of German cinema, for whom initially he worked on the construction of cinematographic equipment. As cameraman for Messter's weekly newsreels he filmed among many other things the aftermath of a train accident on the Berlin elevated railway on 28 September 1908, one of the worst transport disasters of the time. Film director and producer Between 1912 and 1951 he made 77 films. In 1913 Froelich made his directorial debut with ''Richard Wagner (film), Richard Wagner''. Gisela Schlüter (6 June 1914 – 28 October 1995) was a German cabaret performer and actress. Early life Gisela Schlüter was born in Berlin and grew up in Dresden. Her father was an army officer and mother came from Czechoslovakia. She felt drawn to the stage at an early age. At first, she wanted to become a dancer and completed a corresponding training. At 1.76 m, however, she was too tall for such a stage career. Therefore, she took lessons from the Dresden actor Erich Ponto. Career She began her acting career at the age of 19. Charlotte Susa (1 March 1898 – 28 July 1976) was a German actress. Biography Susa was born Charlotta Wegmüller near Memel, East Prussia and first appeared on a stage in 1915 at Tilsit. She chose her mother's maiden name "Susa" as her stage name and began a successful career as a singer and actress at different German opera and operetta stages, e.g. at Brandenburg, Essen, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Cologne and later at the Admiralspalast in Berlin. Susa gave her debut as a film actress in the German silent movie ''Der Prinz und die Tänzerin'' in 1926 and became popular for her roles as a femme fatale.
