The Garland Touch
The Garland Touch is a 1962 Judy Garland album released by Capitol Records. The album assembles recordings made for other projects: six previously unissued selections had been cut in London in early August 1960, while four songs had been previously released—two on the 1958 album ''Judy in Love'' ("Do I Love You?" and " More Than You Know") and two from her recent 1961 single (" Comes Once in a Lifetime" and "Sweet Danger"). This was Garland's last studio album released during her lifetime. Later in London, Garland cut a 1964 EP for EMI Records: '' Judy Garland Sings Lionel Bart's Maggie May'', which Capitol Records did not release in the United States until 2002 (on the compilation CD '' Classic Judy Garland: The Capitol Years 1955-1965''). "It's a Great Day for the Irish" is an Irish-American song that was written in 1940 by Roger Edens, one of the many musical directors at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios under the leadership of Arthur Freed for inclusion in the film version of the George M. Cohan 1922 Broadway show '' Little Nellie Kelly'', directed by Norman Taurog. The rights of the show were sold to MGM by Cohan as a starring vehicle for Judy Garland. The song was partly written to capitalize on Garland's identification with her Irish roots (Garland was a quarter Irish through her maternal grandmother Eva Fitzpatrick). "You'll Never Walk Alone" is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical ''Carousel''. In the second act of the musical, Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the protagonist Julie Jordan, sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" to comfort and encourage Julie when her husband, Billy Bigelow, the male lead, stabs himself with a knife whilst trying to run away after attempting a robbery with his mate Jigger and dies in her arms. The song is reprised in the final scene to encourage a graduation class of which Louise (Billy and Julie's daughter) is a member. The now invisible Billy, who has been granted the chance to return to Earth for one day in order to redeem himself, watches the ceremony and is able to silently motivate Louise and Julie to join in with the song.
