The Game Of The Century (TV Series)
''The Game of the Century'' is a British television documentary series produced by Robert Sidaway and made as an independent production in association with the BBC, which provided use of its football library. The six-part series was a preview of the 1978 FIFA World Cup with a look back at some of the great players and top matches of previous tournaments. The series debuted on BBC One on 23 April 1978. The remainder of the series was shown on consecutive Sundays with the final episode broadcast on 28 May 1978. A book to accompany the series was written by Robert Sidaway and Bob Wilson and published by Fontana on 17 April 1978. Argentina Heroes (We're On Our Way), the theme song from the series, was released by Pye Records on 28 April 1978. The song was performed by Moon Williams, produced by Paul Rade and written by Reade / Marshall. On the B side of the single was So Good So Far, another song featured in the series. Episodes 1. Ally MacLeod
Alistair Reid "Ally" MacLeod (26 February 1931 – 1 February 2004) was a Scottish professional football player and manager. He is perhaps best known for his time as the Scotland national football team manager, including their appearance at the 1978 FIFA World Cup. MacLeod played as a left winger for Third Lanark (two spells), St Mirren, Blackburn Rovers, Hibernian and Ayr United. He then managed Ayr United (three spells), Aberdeen, Scotland, Motherwell, Airdrieonians and Queen of the South. 1974 FIFA World Cup
The 1974 FIFA World Cup was the tenth FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams, and was played in West Germany (and West Berlin) between 13 June and 7 July. The tournament marked the first time that the current trophy, the FIFA World Cup Trophy, created by the Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, was awarded. The previous trophy, the Jules Rimet Trophy, had been won for the third time by Brazil in 1970 and awarded permanently to the Brazilians. This was the first out of three World Cups to feature two rounds of group stages. West Germany won the title, beating the Netherlands 2–1 in the final at the Olympiastadion in Munich. This was the second victory for West Germany, who had also won in 1954. Sir Stanley Ford Rous (25 April 1895 – 18 July 1986) was an English football referee and the 6th President of FIFA, serving from 1961 to 1974. He also served as secretary of the Football Association from 1934 to 1962 and was an international referee. Clive Thomas (football)
Clive Thomas (born 27 June 1936) is a Welsh former football referee, who operated in the English Football League and for FIFA during his career. He came from Treorchy in the Rhondda Valley. Career Thomas's original ambition was to be a professional footballer. He achieved a place on the ground staff at Norwich City, playing as an inside forward. However an ankle injury forced him to give up playing. He was then persuaded to take up refereeing at the age of sixteen. He made rapid progress, reaching the Welsh League and in 1964 became a Football League linesman. Arnaldo Cézar Coelho
Arnaldo David Cézar Coelho (born 15 January 1943) is a former football referee. He was the first Brazilian, indeed the first non-European, to take charge of the FIFA World Cup final when he officiated in the 1982 final between Italy and West Germany. Coelho's career began as a beach soccer referee; he became professional in 1965 (at one time, famously, telling reporters that he was the highest paid match official in the world) and was appointed to the international list in 1968. Robert Sidaway (born 24 January 1942) is an English writer, producer, director and actor.
