Abe Stern
Abe Stern (March 8, 1888 – July 12, 1951) was an American film producer. He produced 542 films between 1917 and 1929. He was a co-founder of Universal Studios. He was born in Fulda, Germany, and died in Los Angeles County, California. He was the brother of producer Julius Stern and the brother-in-law of Universal Studios co-founder Carl Laemmle. He was entombed at Home of Peace Cemetery. Julius Stern (producer)
Julius Stern (March 22, 1886 – April 26, 1977) was an American film producer. He produced 541 films between 1917 and 1929. He was a co-founder of Universal Studios. He was born in Hintersteinau, Germany, and died in New York City, New York. He was the brother of producer Abe Stern and the brother-in-law of Universal Studios co-founder Carl Laemmle. Biography Stern arrived in the United States in 1903 and soon thereafter worked with Carl Laemmle at Continental Clothing (which was owned by Julius' uncle Salomon "Sam" Stern). After Laemmle left Continental in 1905, Julius went to work for Laemmle as an Assistant Manager (1906), then as a Manager (1908) of Laemmle's White Front Theater (1908) and was named Carl Laemmle's personal assistant. As such, he was instrumental in the founding and operation of the Laemmle Film Exchange and the Independent Moving Picture Company (IMP), where he was General Manager, until the founding of Universal. Eva Barbara Novak (February 14, 1898 – April 17, 1988) was an American film actress, who was quite popular during the silent film era. Biography On February 14, 1898, Eva Barbara Novak was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Joseph Jerome Novak, an immigrant from Bohemia, and Barbara Medek. Her older sister, Johana, also became an actress. Joseph Novak died when Eva was still a child and Barbara was left to raise five children.The Independent, London, February 1990 Novak began her acting career in 1917 in L-KO's ''Roped into Scandal'', followed by another seven films that same year. She appeared in 17 films in 1918, and another eight in 1919. In 1920, she starred opposite Tom Mix in ''The Daredevil'', one of six film roles she would have that year, and one of ten films in which she starred opposite Mix. Chai Hong (actor)
Chai Hong (often billed as Charlie from the Orient) was a Korea-born actor and comedian who appeared in a string of Hollywood comedies during the silent era. He was often referred to as "the Chinese Charlie Chaplin". Biography Chai Hong was born in 1885 and subsequently raised by his grandmother, according to information he gave "Screenland" columnist Ogden Lawrence. He eventually immigrated to Hawaii and later to Los Angeles. After working as a bellboy at the Hotel Alexandria, he broke into Hollywood after being scouted by L-KO. He appeared in more than 20 films between 1918 and 1922; According to author Thomas Reeder, Hong was working as Lew Cody's valet and houseman mid-1925. Researcher Jesse Brisson feels pretty positive he later went by the name "Chester Hong," moved to New York City, and worked as a cook.
