''The First Circle'' (russian: link=no, В круге первом, ) is a 2006 Russian miniseries directed by Gleb Panfilov, with ten 44-minute episodes. It is based on ''The First Circle'', the novel written by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn based on his experiences in Joseph Stalin's Gulag. The series was first broadcast in the Russia on Telekanal Rossiya on January 29, 2006. Plot Based on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's autobiographical novel and set during the fearful times of Stalin's mass arrests, the series takes place in a sharashka, a prison-laboratory for secret research where Russia's greatest minds are put to government use. While living conditions in this "first circle of hell" are incomparably superior to the Gulag camps, the scientists there face the moral dilemma of cooperating with an inhuman system. Gleb Panfilov
Gleb Anatolyevich Panfilov (russian: Глеб Анатольевич Панфилов, link=no; born 21 May 1934 in Magnitogorsk) is an internationally acclaimed Russian film director noted for a string of mostly historical films starring his wife, Inna Churikova. Biography In the 1980s Panfilov, a chemist by profession, moved to theatre directing, but also found time to adapt for the screen Alexander Vampilov's play ''Valentina'' (1981), as well as Maxim Gorky's '' Vassa Zheleznova'' (1983) and ''Mother'' Mother (1990 film), (1989). ''Vassa'' won the Golden Prize at the 13th Moscow International Film Festival and Russia's State Prize. Igor Vladimirovich Kvasha (russian: Игорь Владимирович Кваша; 4 February 1933 — 30 August 2012) was a Soviet and Russian theater and film actor. He was a leading actor of Sovremennik Theater. Igor Kvasha was one of the Sovremennik founders along with Galina Volchek, Oleg Yefremov, Yevgeniy Yevstigneyev and Oleg Tabakov. He was honored with People's Artist of Russia in 1978.
