The Father And The Assassin
''The Father and the Assassin'' is a play written by Anupama Chandrasekhar. It tells the story of Nathuram Godse, a follower of Gandhi who would go on to shoot him. The play premiered on 12 May 2022 at the National Theatre in London, directed by Indhu Rubasingham. Production history Anupama Chandrasekhar began writing ''The Father and the Assassin'' in 2016. She developed the first and second drafts as a writer-in-residence National Theatre in London. In November 2021, the National Theatre announced its schedule through summer 2022, including ''The Father and the Assassin'' in May on the Olivier stage, starring Shubham Saraf alongside Sagar Arya, Ayesha Dharker, and Peter Singh. Further cast members were announced in February 2022. In an interview with ''The Guardian'', Chandrasekhar stated "My job is to chronicle the changes that are happening in society", and that as a result of the rise of Hindu nationalism, Godse had "entered political conversations in India". Anupama Chandrasekhar
Anupama Chandrasekhar is an Indian playwright born and based in Chennai. She is best known for her play ''The Father and the Assassin'', which earned her a nomination for the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for Best Play and was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Career Chandrasekhar's plays have been staged at leading venues in India, Europe, Canada, and the US. She was the National Theatre, London's first international playwright-in-residence from 2016 to 2017, and was formerly a journalist with the Hindu Business Line. ''Amadeus'' is a play by Peter Shaffer which gives a fictional account of the lives of composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, first performed in 1979. It was inspired by Alexander Pushkin's short 1830 play '' Mozart and Salieri'', which Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov used in 1897 as the libretto for an opera of the same name. The play makes significant use of the music of Mozart, Salieri and other composers of the period. Sir Peter Levin Shaffer (; 15 May 1926 – 6 June 2016) was an English playwright, screenwriter, and novelist. He wrote numerous award-winning plays, of which several were adapted into films. Early life Shaffer was born to a Jewish family in Liverpool, the son of Reka (née Fredman) and estate agent Jack Shaffer. He grew up in London and was the identical twin brother of fellow playwright Anthony Shaffer.
