The Farmer's Return From London
''The Farmer's Return from London'' is a 94-line verse interlude written in 1762 by David Garrick. It was originally written for the charitable benefit of Hannah Pritchard and was first performed on 20 March 1762 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. The performance featured Garrick as the farmer and Lucretia Bradshaw as his wife. ''The Farmer's Return from London'' was well received and performed several more times over the course of the theatrical season. The interlude was sometimes included at the end of an evening's performance; on 25 January 1763 it followed ''The Two Gentlemen of Verona'' and preceded a comic dance called 'The Flemish Feast'. When the play was published later in 1762, Garrick's introductory note mentioned the occasion for which it was written and excused bringing the piece before the greater public because "his friend Mr Hogarth [had] flattered him most agreeably by thinking [the piece] not unworthy of a sketch of his pencil". Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle (, ) is a market town on the north bank of the River Tees, in County Durham, Northern England. The town is named after and built around a medieval castle ruin. Johann Jacob Haid or Johann Jakob Haid (1704–1767) was a German engraving, engraver who worked in Augsburg. Life and works Haid came from a German family of artists and engravers and was known for large mezzotint portraits. He worked in England, and it has been suggested that he borrowed from the work of Robert Robinson (painter), Robert Robinson (c. 1651 – 1706), who was a popular English mezzotint engraver, painter, and stage designer. Bowes Museum
The Bowes Museum is an art gallery in the town of Barnard Castle, in County Durham in northern England. It was built to designs by Jules Pellechet and John Edward Watson to house the art collection of John Bowes and his wife Joséphine Benoîte Coffin-Chevallier, and opened in 1892. It contains paintings by El Greco, Francisco Goya, Canaletto, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and François Boucher, together with items of decorative art, ceramics, textiles, tapestries, clocks and costumes, and objects of local historical interest. James Basire
James Basire (1730–1802 London), also known as James Basire Sr., was a British engraver. He is the most significant of a family of engravers, and noted for his apprenticing of the young William Blake. Early life His father was Isaac Basire (1704–1768), a cartographer, his son (1769–1822) and grandson (1796–1869) were also named James; these four generations of Basires were all engravers. William Hogarth
William Hogarth (; 10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, engraver, pictorial satirist, social critic, editorial cartoonist and occasional writer on art. Cock Lane Ghost
The Cock Lane ghost was a purported haunting that attracted mass public attention in 1762. The location was a lodging in Cock Lane, a short road adjacent to London's Smithfield market and a few minutes' walk from St Paul's Cathedral. The event centred on three people: William Kent, a usurer from Norfolk; Richard Parsons, a parish clerk; and Parsons' daughter Elizabeth. Following the death during childbirth of Kent's wife, Elizabeth Lynes, he became romantically involved with her sister, Fanny. Canon law prevented the couple from marrying, but they nevertheless moved to London and lodged at the property in Cock Lane, then owned by Parsons.
