The Energy Loop: Huntington/Eccles Canyons Scenic Byway is a National Scenic Byway in the state of Utah. It spans approximately as it travels from Fairview, Utah, Fairview through the Manti-La Sal National Forest southeast to Huntington, Utah, Huntington via Huntington Canyon, Utah, Huntington Canyon, and northeast to near Colton, Utah, Colton via Eccles Canyon, Utah, Eccles Canyon. Route description The route begins in Fairview, Utah, Fairview at the intersection of U.S. Route 89 in Utah, US-89 and Utah State Route 31, SR-31 following SR-31 eastward and immediately connects with the north end of Utah State Route 231, SR-231. As it exits the city, it turns northeast to follow Cottonwood Creek (Sanpete County, Utah), Cottonwood Creek towards and into Fairview Canyon, about from the beginning of the route. UDOT
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is an agency of the state government of Utah, United States; it is usually referred to by its initials UDOT (pronounced "you-dot"). Scofield Reservoir
Scofield Reservoir is a reservoir impounded by Scofield Dam, in Carbon County, Utah. Located on the Price River, a tributary of the Green River, Scofield Reservoir is adjacent to the northernmost boundary of the Manti–La Sal National Forest. The reservoir sits at an elevation of , on the northern edge of the Wasatch Plateau. Utah State Route 96 runs along the western shoreline. After initial attempts to complete a permanent dam on the Price River, the Scofield project was initiated by the US Bureau of Reclamation. The Scofield project eventually irrigated area lands originally to be served by Mammoth Dam, and later by the defunct Gooseberry project. The present-day dam was completed in 1946. Besides providing flood protection due to variable stream flow, the reservoir is an important source of water for municipal and industrial sources. Scofield, Utah
Scofield is a town in Carbon County, Utah, United States. The population was 23 at the 2010 census. Scofield's name is frequently applied to the 1900 mine disaster in the Pleasant Valley Coal Company's Winter Quarters mine. The community was named for ''General Charles W. Scofield'', a timber contractor and local mine official. It is the smallest incorporated area in Utah by population. History The town of Scofield is situated on high ground two miles south of the reservoir of the same name, the oldest and largest of the major impoundments on the Wasatch Plateau. Once the most populous community in Carbon County, Scofield has shrunk to only a few permanent residents. What has slowed the continual decline has become outsiders constructing summer vacation homes. State Route 264 is a state highway in central Utah that connects Sanpete County to Carbon County through Flat Canyon, Boulger Canyon, Upper Huntington Canyon, and Eccles Canyon. It is part of The Energy Loop, a National Scenic Byway. Route description From its western terminus at SR-31, SR-264 heads southeast until it reaches Emery County, where it turns to the north. Huntington State Park
Huntington State Park is a state park of Utah, United States, featuring a warm-water reservoir. The state park is located near the town of Huntington. Description Huntington Reservoir was completed in 1966 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation as part of an Emery County irrigation and recreation project. This warm-water reservoir supports waterskiing, fishing, and crawdad catching. Largemouth bass and bluegill are the most noteworthy fish in this warm-water lake. Many migratory birds, specifically waterfowl, are sighted in this area. The town of Huntington was founded in 1877. The name of both the town and reservoir honors the three Huntington brothers, Oliver, William, and Dimick, who first explored this area in 1855. Dimick was an interpreter for the local Indians; William was famed as a scout and explorer; and Oliver was an official recorder for the unsuccessful Elk Mountain Mission to Moab. Huntington Creek (Utah)
Huntington Creek is a tributary of the San Rafael River in northwestern Emery County, Utah, United States. It rises in the Electric Lake on the Wasatch Plateau in the Manti-La Sal National Forest, and flows down to the floor of Castle Valley in Emery County. Electric Lake, created in 1974, regulates its flow to supply water to the Huntington Power Plant at the bottom of the canyon. The creek is an important fishery. Electric Lake
Electric Lake is a large reservoir on Huntington Creek high on the east slope of the Wasatch Plateau in Utah. The reservoir was created in 1974 by the construction of an earth-fill dam. The shoreline is primarily owned by Utah Power and Light (UP&L) and the Huntington-Cleveland Irrigation Company. Access is limited but the northern end of the reservoir is adjacent to the national forest and access is unrestricted at that point. Uses Water is consumed for irrigation and power plant cooling, but also used for recreation and coldwater aquatic habitat.
