''The Enchanted Cottage'' is a romance by the English playwright Arthur Wing Pinero, written in 1921. The play opened on Broadway at the Ritz Theatre on March 31, 1923, directed by Jessie Bonstelle and William A. Brady, and starring Herbert Bunston and Katharine Cornell and ran for 65 performances until May 1923. In April 1925, ''The Enchanted Cottage'' was the opening play for the Omaha Community Playhouse, starring Dodie Brando, mother of Marlon Brando. The play was published by Heinemann in 1922. ''The Enchanted Cottage'' is a 1945 American romantic fantasy starring Dorothy McGuire, Robert Young, and Herbert Marshall, with Mildred Natwick. It was based on the 1923 play by Arthur Wing Pinero. The film was produced by Richard Barthelmess, through his company Inspiration, and released through Associated First National. Barthelmess and May McAvoy star in the drama. Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire starred in a 1945 version also based on the 1923 play. William Heinemann Ltd., with the imprint Heinemann, was a London publisher founded in 1890 by William Heinemann. Their first published book, 1890's ''The Bondman'', was a huge success in the United Kingdom and launched the company. He was joined in 1893 by Sydney Pawling. Heinemann died in 1920 and Pawling sold the company to Doubleday, having worked with them in the past to publish their works in the United States. Pawling died in 1922 and new management took over. Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (24 May 185523 November 1934) was an English playwright and, early in his career, actor. Pinero was drawn to the theatre from an early age, and became a professional actor at the age of 19. He gained experience as a supporting actor in British provincial theatres, and from 1876 to 1881 was a member of Henry Irving's company, based at the Lyceum Theatre, London, Lyceum Theatre, London. Pinero wrote his first play in 1877. Seven years later, having written 15 more, three of them highly successful, he abandoned acting and became a full-time playwright. Omaha Community Playhouse
The Omaha Community Playhouse, located at 6915 Cass Street in Omaha, Nebraska, United States, is a nationally recognized community theater. Founded in 1924, the Playhouse's first president was Alan McDonald, architect of the Joslyn Art Museum, and its first play, directed by Greg Foley in April 1925, was '' The Enchanted Cottage'', which starred Dodie Brando, the mother of Marlon Brando. When, later in the Playhouse's first season, the need arose for a young man to play the lead for ''You and I'', Dodie Brando suggested that twenty-year-old Henry Fonda, son of her friend Herberta Fonda, contact the director. Katharine Cornell (February 16, 1893June 9, 1974) was an American stage actress, writer, theater owner and producer. She was born in Berlin to American parents and raised in Buffalo, New York. Dubbed "The First Lady of the Theatre" by critic Alexander Woollcott, Cornell was the first performer to receive the Drama League Award, for ''Romeo and Juliet'' in 1935.
