''The Early Years Live'' is a video album of various live performances of the Dead Kennedys, filmed from 1978 to 1981 by Joe Reis, owner of the punk-centric video studio Target Video. It was officially released on VHS in July 1987 (and heavily pirated some years afterward) and on DVD in 2001. Dead Kennedys
Dead Kennedys are an American punk rock band that formed in San Francisco, California, in 1978. The band was one of the defining punk rock, punk bands during its initial eight-year run. Dead Kennedys' lyrics were usually political in nature, satirizing political figures and authority in general, as well as popular culture and even the punk movement itself. During their initial incarnation between 1978 and 1986, they attracted considerable controversy for their provocative lyrics and artwork. Several stores refused to stock their recordings, provoking debate about censorship in rock music; in the mid-1980s, vocalist and primary lyricist Jello Biafra became an active campaigner against the Parents Music Resource Center. Mabuhay Gardens
The Mabuhay Gardens, also known as The Fab Mab or The Mab, was a former San Francisco nightclub, located at 443 Broadway Street, in North Beach on the Broadway strip area best known for its striptease clubs. It closed in 1987. History The Mabuhay Gardens was located in the lower level of the 435 Broadway Street building, which also housed the ''On Broadway Theater'', known in 1984–1985 as "Rock on Broadway." Originally a Filipino restaurant and music club owned by Ness Aquino. It featured many Filipino celebrities, including Eddie Mesa and Amapola (also known as Amapola Cabase). Aquino and Amapola also co-hosted a weekly television program, ''The Amapola Presents Show'' on KEMO TV Channel 20. During the late 1970s, Jerry Paulsen was the first promoter of bands to appear at Mabuhay Gardens on a regular basis. Sproul Plaza (pronounced ) is one center of student activity at the University of California, Berkeley. It is divided into two sections: Upper Sproul and Lower Sproul. They are vertically separated by and linked by a set of stairs. "Holiday in Cambodia" is a song by American punk rock band Dead Kennedys. The record was released as the group's second single in May 1980 by Optional Music with "Police Truck" as the B-side. The photograph on the front cover of the single was taken from the Thammasat University massacre in Thailand, depicting a crowd member beating the hanged corpse of a student protester with a metal chair. The song was re-recorded for the band's first album, ''Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables'' (1980); the original recording of the song, as well as the single's B-side, are available on the rarities album ''Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death'' (1987). "Bleed for Me" (B-side "Life Sentence") was the sixth single by punk rock band (music), band Dead Kennedys. It was released in July 1982 on Alternative Tentacles. The music is cold and intimidating, and the lyrics describe kidnappings and torture carried out by a secret police (presumably the Central Intelligence Agency). There follows a bridge, then the music becomes light and almost cheerful as the lyrics describe US foreign policy as utilizing murderous dictatorships to secure economic concessions that favor United States, American corporations. "Bleed for Me" also plays in the background of the Dead Kennedys' song "Kinky Sex (Makes the World Go 'Round)", in which an aide for the Ronald Reagan, Reagan White House arranges World War III on the phone with Margaret Thatcher, who moans erotically at every new wiktionary:atrocity, atrocity; this track may be a reference to the Thatchergate tape. "Kill the Poor" is a song by Dead Kennedys, released in October 1980 on Cherry Red Records as the band's third single, with "In-sight" as its B-side. The song is a scathing satire of the elite who if given the chance, would wipe out the impoverished with a bomb. The title track was re-recorded for the band's first album, ''Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables'' (1980), although the single and album versions show little difference in comparison. The B-side of this single is also additionally on the compilation album ''Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death'' (1987). A special "disco version" was played and recorded on March 3, 1979 and released on their live album '' Live at the Deaf Club.''
