The Dyehouse
''The Dyehouse'' (1961) is the debut novel by Australian writer Mena Calthorpe. Story outline The novel is set in a textile dye factory in a drab Sydney industrial suburb. It follows the interacting stories of the men and women who work at the Southern Textiles Dye Work in the mid-1950s. Critical reception Joyce Halstead in ''The Australian Women's Weekly'' noted some shortcomings but found: "Though there is a groping for the subtleties which would make the characters more convincing, the style is simple and precise and the backgrounds are handled with freshness and skill." In ''The Canberra Times'', the reviewer also found first novel problems but saw the worth in the end product: "She has considerable skill as a writer, her great strength appears to be story construction. Mena Calthorpe
Mena Ivy Bright Calthorpe (1905–1996) was an Australian writer, who was once short listed for the Miles Franklin Award. Personal life Calthorpe (née Field) was born in Goulburn, New South Wales and was a keen writer from an early age. Educated at St Bridgets and Our Lady of Mercy College at Goulburn, she became a schoolteacher and worked at several small country schools for nearly ten years. She was always keen on writing and credits encouragement for her early work to an older friend, Timpy Hebblewhite, the wife of the former editor of the Goulburn Evening Penny Post, TJ Hebblewhite. Her short stories were occasionally accepted for publication on the back page of the Daily Mirror (in the 'Ten Minute Stories' section). She was 28 when she married Bill Calthorpe, two years her junior, who worked on his family's sheep property, Douro Station outside Yass. Text Publishing is an independent Australian publisher of fiction and non-fiction, based in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. Company background Text Media was founded in Melbourne in 1990 by Diana Gribble and Eric Beecher, along with designer Chong Weng Ho and others, with a small book publishing division known as Text Publishing. Michael Heyward joined in 1992, and the small publishing house became independent in 1994. When Text Media was taken over by Fairfax Media in 2004, Michael Heyward and his wife Penny Hueston entered into a joint venture with Scottish publisher Canongate. Maureen and Tony Wheeler, founders of Lonely Planet, bought Canongate's share in Text in 2011, making it a wholly Australian-owned company. In 2012, Text launched a series of Australian classics, republishing out of print works that had been, for the most part, lost to literary history.
