The Double Event (1911 Film)
''The Double Event'' is a 1911 Australian feature-length film directed by W. J. Lincoln based on the first novel by Nat Gould, which had been adapted several times for the stage, notably by Bland Holt. It was one of several films Lincoln made with the Tait family, who had produced ''The Story of the Kelly Gang''. It is considered a lost film. Plot Jack Drayton discovers his brother is an attempted murderer but won't expose him out of fear of ruining the family name. He leaves England in secrecy and starts a new life in Australia under the name of Jack Marston. He falls in love with Edith the daughter of a Sydney bookmaker, John Kingdon. He enters his horse, Caloola, in the Melbourne Cup and it wins, despite the attempts of evil Fletcher. Fletcher later shoots a lady he is trying to blackmail and is chased across town but is eventually cornered in Chinatown and falls to his death. Jack marries Edith and returns to England. William Gibson (producer)
William Alfred Gibson (1869 – 6 October 1929) was an Australians, Australian film producer and exhibitor best known for his collaboration with Millard Johnson (producer), Millard Johnson. He was one of the producers of ''The Story of the Kelly Gang'' (1906) and helped establish Amalgamated Pictures. Gibson originally worked as a chemist for William Johnson and supplied chemicals to early film exhibitors. He went into exhibition himself with Johnson's son Millard, later expanding into film processing and photography. He and Johnson helped produce ''The Story of the Kelly Gang'' (1906), arguably the world's first feature film. This was made with the John Tait (entrepreneur), Tait brothers with whom Gibson and Johnson formed Amalgamated Pictures. George Darrell
George Frederick Price Darrell (1851–1921) was an Australian playwright best known for '' The Sunny South'' (1883), which was made into a film ''The Sunny South or The Whirlwind of Fate''. Darrell began his professional career with Simonsen's Opera Company in New Zealand; but, on migrating to Melbourne, took to the regular dramatic profession, earning some distinction as a juvenile supporter of the once idolised Walter Montgomery. He married Mrs. Robert Heir (''née'' Fanny Cathcart), the admirable tragédienne, and subsequently visited professionally America and England, where, at the Grand Theatre, Islington, he produced his play ''The Sunny South''. His last play, ''The Land of Gold'' was staged by Charles Holloway at the Criterion Theatre, Sydney in 1907. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984.
