The Doors
The Doors were an American Rock music, rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. They were among the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s, partly due to Morrison's lyrics and voice, along with his erratic stage persona. The group is widely regarded as an important figure of the counterculture of the 1960s, era's counterculture. The band took its name from the title of Aldous Huxley's book ''The Doors of Perception'', itself a reference to a quote by William Blake. After signing with Elektra Records in 1966, the Doors with Morrison recorded and released six studio albums in five years, some of which are generally considered among the greatest of all time, including The Doors (album), their self-titled debut (1967), ''Strange Days (The Doors album), Strange Days'' (1967), and ''L.A. Woman'' (1971). They were one of the most successful bands during that tim ...

People Are Strange
"People Are Strange" is a song by the American rock band the Doors. It appears on the band's second studio album, '' Strange Days'', released in September 1967. It was also issued the same month as a single, which peaked at number 12 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart and in the top ten on the Cash Box charts. The song was written by Jim Morrison and Robby Krieger, although credit was given to each of the Doors. The single was released with "Unhappy Girl" as the B-side. Writing The song's composition started in early 1967. According to Doors drummer John Densmore, he and Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, who had then been roommates, were visited by Jim Morrison who appeared to be "deeply depressed." At Krieger's description, they later took a walk along Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles. Morrison returned from the walk "euphoric" with the early lyrics of "People Are Strange". Intrigued by the new lyrics, Krieger was convinced that the song was a hit upon hear ...

American Bandstand
''American Bandstand'', abbreviated ''AB'', is an American music-performance and dance television program that aired in various versions from 1952 to 1989, and was hosted from 1956 until its final season by Dick Clark, who also served as the program's producer. It featured teenagers dancing to Top 40 music introduced by Clark; at least one popular musical act—over the decades, running the gamut from Jerry Lee Lewis to Run–D.M.C.—usually appeared in person to lip-sync one of their latest singles. Freddy Cannon holds the record for most appearances, at 110. The show's popularity helped Dick Clark become an American media mogul and inspired similar long-running music programs, such as '' Soul Train'' and British series ''Top of the Pops''. Clark eventually assumed ownership of the program through his Dick Clark Productions company. Background ''American Bandstand'' premiered locally in late March 1952 as ''Bandstand'' on Philadelphia television station WFIL-TV Channel 6 (n ...

The Crystal Ship
"The Crystal Ship" is a song by American rock band the Doors, from their 1967 debut album ''The Doors'', and the B-side of the number-one hit single "Light My Fire". It was composed as a love song to Jim Morrison's first serious girlfriend, Mary Werbelow, shortly after their relationship ended. The song is inspired by the poem ''The Crystal Cabinet'' by William Blake. It is one of many of Morrison's songs inspired by Blake’s poetry. The song borrows from elements from baroque music. The lyrics in the opening verse resembles a conventional love song, while the later verses are vague in intention and contain more challenging imagery. A music video was later compiled from footage of the band performing on ''American Bandstand'', coupled with film of Morrison and Pamela Courson at Kern River, near Bakersfield, California. Lyrics Morrison's lyrics are often deliberately vague, and this, coupled with the song's dreamlike atmosphere, has led to speculation as to the meaning of "The ...

The End (The Doors Song)
"The End" is an epic song by the American rock band the Doors. Lead singer Jim Morrison initially wrote the lyrics about his break up with an old girlfriend Mary Werbelow, but it evolved through months of performances at the Whisky a Go Go into a much longer song. The Doors recorded a nearly 12-minute version for their self-titled debut album, which was released on January 4, 1967. "The End" was ranked at number 336 on 2010 ''Rolling Stone'' magazines list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song's guitar solo was ranked number 93 on ''Guitar World''s "100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time". Lyrics and recording In a 1969 interview with Jerry Hopkins, Morrison said about the lyrics: When interviewed by Lizze James, he pointed out the meaning of the verse "My only friend, the End": Shortly past the midpoint of the nearly 12-minute-long album version, the song enters a spoken word section with the words, "The killer awoke before dawn / he put his boots on". That ...

The Jonathan Winters Show
''The Jonathan Winters Show'' is the first of two American television network Variety show television programs to be hosted by comedian Jonathan Winters. The television series was broadcast from October 1956 to June 1957 on NBC. Synopsis This ''Jonathan Winters Show'' was aired at the beginning of prime time, from 7:30 to 7:45 PM Eastern time on Tuesday nights, to round out the half-hour containing NBC's evening newscast, which was at the time, like all similar programs, likewise only 15 minutes long. This program replaced the Tuesday night broadcast of ''The Dinah Shore Show'', which, since 1951, was broadcast on both Tuesday and Thursday nights and reduced in October 1956 to Thursday nights only. Although network evening newscasts were not expanded to a half hour until 1963, the 1956-57 season was the last one in which the American networks aired 15 minute long entertainment programs to complete filling the time slot. This series holds the distinction of being the first t ...

Moonlight Drive
"Moonlight Drive" is a song by American rock band the Doors, released in 1967 on their second album '' Strange Days''. It was edited to a 2:16 length for the 45 rpm single B-side of " Love Me Two Times". Though a conventional blues arrangement, the track's defining feature was its slightly off-beat rhythm, and Robby Krieger's "bottleneck" or slide guitar, which creates an eerie sound. Composition The song is one of the first written by the lead singer Jim Morrison. According to the Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman biography ''No One Here Gets Out Alive'', Morrison wrote "Moonlight Ride" during his halcyon days on a rooftop in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, California, in 1965. Later on, when he happened upon his friend and future band member, Ray Manzarek, he uttered the memorable lines, "Let's swim to the moon, let's climb through the tide, penetrate the evening that the city sleeps to hide." Reportedly Manzarek was awestruck, and they decided to form a band. Morrison already had ...

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour
''The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour'' was an American comedy and variety show television series hosted by the Smothers Brothers and initially airing on CBS from 1967 to 1969. The series was a major success, especially considering it was scheduled against the major NBC television series ''Bonanza'', with content that appealed to contemporary youth viewership with daring political satire humor and major music acts such as Buffalo Springfield, Pete Seeger, Cream, and the Who. Despite this success, continual conflicts with network executives over content led to the show being abruptly pulled from the schedule in violation of the Smothers' contract in 1969. History The evolution of The Comedy Hour was unique to a medium that was fearful of change. The show debuted in the winter of 1967 as a slightly "hip" version of the typical comedy-variety show of its era. But within weeks it rapidly evolved into a program that extended the boundaries of what was considered permissible in telev ...

Touch Me (The Doors Song)
"Touch Me" is a song by the Doors from their 1969 album ''The Soft Parade''. Written by guitarist Robby Krieger in late 1968, it is notable for its extensive usage of brass and string instruments, including a solo by featured saxophonist Curtis Amy. It was released as a single in December 1968 and reached No. 3 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 (their last Top Ten hit in US) and No. 1 in the '' Cashbox'' Top 100 in early 1969 (the band's third American number-one single). The single also did well elsewhere, peaking at No. 1 in the ''RPM'' Canadian Singles Chart and at No. 10 in the Kent Music Report in Australia. However, despite the band's commercial success the previous year, "Touch Me" did not chart in the UK Singles Chart. Composition According to Bruce Botnick's liner notes, the song was initially referred to by its various working titles; "I'm Gonna Love You", from a line in the chorus, or "Hit Me", a reference to blackjack. The opening line was originally "C'mon, hit me  ...

Love Me Two Times
"Love Me Two Times" is a song by the American rock band the Doors. First appearing on their second studio album '' Strange Days'', it was later edited to a 2:37 length and released as the second single (after "People Are Strange") from that album. The single reached number 25 on the charts in the United States. "Love Me Two Times" was considered to be somewhat risqué for radio airplay, being banned in New Haven for being "too controversial," much to the dismay of the band. Composition As with the other songs on ''Strange Days'', the album liner notes list the songwriters as the Doors as does the "Love Me Two Times" single; the performance rights organization ASCAP shows the writers as the individual Doors members. "Love Me Two Times" incorporates elements from baroque music and has been classified as a pop and blues song. Band guitarist Robby Krieger stated to '' Guitar World''s Alan Paul that the song's musical idea came from a lick by one of Danny Kalb's compositions. Do ...

Feast Of Friends
''Feast of Friends'' is a 1969 documentary film about the American rock band the Doors. It was directed by Paul Ferrara, Babe Hill and The Doors. Ferrara followed the Doors between April and September 1968, filming excerpts of concert performances, conversations between the band and the band relaxing backstage. Hill recorded the audio using a portable Nagra recorder. The documentary was never officially completed, although it was shown at film festivals. A restored version was released on DVD and Blu-ray in 2014. Cast Production Filming using 16mm cameras took place during the band’s 1968 summer tour. Although all of the band's Hollywood Bowl appearance in July 1968 was recorded, few other songs by the Doors were recorded in their entirety. Towards the end of the summer of 1968, the band reviewed the expenditure on the film and halted any further recording. Frank Lisciandro (who had attended film school at UCLA with Morrison and Manzarek) undertook to create a first cut of the ...

Roadhouse Blues
"Roadhouse Blues" is a song by the American rock band the Doors from their 1970 album '' Morrison Hotel''. It was released as the B-side of "You Make Me Real", which peaked at No. 50 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100. "Roadhouse Blues" charted in its own right on the ''Cash Box'' Top 100, peaking at No. 76. The song became a concert staple for the group and it has been covered by numerous artists. Hailed by sound engineer Bruce Botnick as "the all-time American bar band song," "Roadhouse Blues"–despite its relatively unsuccessful chart peak–received strong airplay on rock radio stations. The song's title was considered for the name of the album, but it was eventually changed. It was ranked the 153rd best classic-rock song of all time by Q104,3. Recording The song was recorded over two days, from November 4 to 5, 1969. Producer Paul A. Rothchild insisted on several takes, some of which were included on the 2006 remastered album. Jim Morrison, who was intoxicated during t ...
