''The Devil in Love'' (french: Le Diable amoureux, 1772) is an occult romance by Jacques Cazotte which tells of a demon, or devil, who falls in love with a young Spanish nobleman named Don Alvaro, an amateur human dabbler, and attempts, in the guise of a young woman, to win his affections. French critic P.G. Castex has described ''The Devil In Love'' as "the very initiator of the modern fantasy story". Canadian critic Carlo Testa has described ''The Devil In Love'' (in review of Stephen Sartarelli's 1993 translation) as a "terminus a quo" in the history of the demonic subgenre". The ''Le Diable amoureux'' started a literary style known as ''fantastique'', where surreal events intrude on reality and the reader is left guessing whether the events actually occurred or were merely the product of the character's imagination. Jacques Cazotte
Jacques Cazotte (; 17 October 1719 – 25 September 1792) was a French author. Life Born in Dijon, he was educated by the Jesuits. Cazotte then worked for the French Ministry of the Marine and at the age of 27 he obtained a public office at Martinique. ''The Arabian nights : A Companion''. by Robert Irwin. Jarboe Devereaux, known mononymously as Jarboe (), is an American singer and musician who came to prominence as a member of the New York City experimental rock band Swans in 1985. Jarboe and Michael Gira, the founder of Swans, were the two constant members of the group until it broke up in 1997. The Tiger Lillies are a cult British musical trio formed in 1989 by singer-songwriter Martyn Jacques. Described as the forefathers of Brechtian Punk Cabaret, the Tiger Lillies are well known for their unique sound and style which merges "the macabre magic of pre-war Berlin with the savage edge of punk".
