''The Definitive Performances (1963–1987)'' is an anthology of performances by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. It was produced by Reelin' in the Years Productions and the Universal Music Group International, in conjunction with Motown. In addition to the musical performances, this DVD also features the first - ever in depth interview with original Miracles members Smokey Robinson, Bobby Rogers, and Pete Moore. Strangely, original members Marv Tarplin & Claudette Robinson are not present, but are mentioned throughout the disc. (Original member Ronnie White is now deceased.) The disc also features 2 hit songs by the group featuring Smokey's replacement, Billy Griffin, and three of Smokey's Post- Miracles solo hits. During the interview, the three Miracles discuss the history of the group, the formation of Motown, and detailed stories behind the creation of some of their greatest hits. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
The Miracles (also known as Smokey Robinson and the Miracles from 1965 to 1972) were an American vocal group that was the first successful recording act for Berry Gordy's Motown Records, and one of the most important and most influential groups in pop, rock and roll, soul and R&B music history. Referred to as Motown's "soul supergroup", the Miracles recorded 26 Top 40 Pop hits, sixteen of which reached the ''Billboard'' Top 20, seven top 10 singles, and a number one single ("The Tears of a Clown") while the Robinsons and Tarplin were members. Following the departure of Tarplin and the Robinsons, the rest of the group continued with singer Billy Griffin and managed by Martin Pichinson who helped rebuild the Miracles, they scored two final top 20 singles, "Do It Baby" and " Love Machine", a second No. 1 hit, which topped the charts before the group departed for Columbia Records in 1977, recording as a quintet with Billy's brother Donald Griffin replacing Marv Tarplin, where afte ... Do It Baby
"Do It Baby" is a 1974 single recorded and released by the Motown R&B group The Miracles. The song was taken from the album of the same name, and written by Motown staff songwriters Freddie Perren and Christine Yarian and produced by Perren. Background "Do It Baby" marked the soul quintet's first top forty hit over a year and a half after the departure of the group's most important member, former leader Smokey Robinson and the inclusion of Billy Griffin, who took over Robinson's lead position in 1973. The song's production also was a far departure from the group's earliest sounds as they embraced a funkier production style. The single was released off of the group's 1974 album of the same name and reached the ''Billboard'' Pop Top 20, selling over one million copies. ''The Don Knotts Show'' was a variety program aired by NBC as part of its 1970-71 lineup.Brooks, Tim and Marsh, Earle, ''The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows'' Long relegated to the role of sidekick, which he had portrayed for many years in several television series and films, Don Knotts was the headliner here. The Tears Of A Clown
"The Tears of a Clown" is a song written by Hank Cosby, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder and originally recorded by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles for the Tamla Records label subsidiary of Motown, first appearing on the 1967 album '' Make It Happen''. ''The Mike Douglas Show'' was an American daytime television talk show that was hosted by Mike Douglas. It began as a local program in Cleveland before being carried on other stations owned by Westinghouse Broadcasting. The show went into national syndication and was moved to Philadelphia in 1965. The program remained on television until 1981. It was distributed by Westinghouse Broadcasting, and for much of its run, originated from studios at two of the company's TV stations in Cleveland and Philadelphia. "I Second That Emotion" is a 1967 song written by Smokey Robinson and Al Cleveland. First charting as a hit for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles on the Tamla/Motown label in 1967, "I Second That Emotion" was later a hit single for the group duet Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations, also on the Motown label. Song origin One morning in 1967, Robinson and Cleveland were shopping at Hudson's, a Detroit department store. Robinson found a set of pearls for his wife, Claudette. "They're beautiful." he said to the salesperson. "I sure hope she likes them." Cleveland then added "I second that emotion." Both songwriters laughed at Cleveland's malapropism; he had meant to say "I second that motion." The two were immediately inspired to write a song using the incorrect phrase. "My Girl Has Gone" is a 1965 R&B single recorded by The Miracles for Motown's Tamla label. Included on their 1965 album ''Going to a Go-Go'', "My Girl Has Gone" was the follow-up to the group's number 16 ''Billboard'' Hot 100 million-selling hit "The Tracks Of My Tears". Written by Miracles members Smokey Robinson, Ronnie White, Pete Moore, and Marv Tarplin, the single was a Top 20 Pop hit, peaking at number 14 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 in the United States, and was also a Top 5 R&B hit, peaking at number three on ''Billboard's'' R&B singles chart. According to Robinson, Moore, and Bobby Rogers, the inspiration behind "My Girl Has Gone" was the guitar riffs of Miracles member Marv Tarplin, who also inspired "The Tracks of My Tears". "Going to a Go-Go" is a 1965 single recorded by The Miracles for Motown's Tamla label. The Miracles' original version Smokey Robinson sings lead on "Going to a Go-Go", which he co-wrote with fellow Miracles Pete Moore, Bobby Rogers, and Marv Tarplin. ''Swingin' Time'' was a music variety show, similar to ''American Bandstand'', hosted by WKNR (Keener 13, Detroit) personality Robin Seymour and also, for a time, CKLW radio's Tom Shannon. This show was broadcast on CKLW-TV Channel 9 (now CBET-DT) out of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, from 1965 to 1968, and also seen in a few other markets in syndication.
