The Dark Tower (Nox Arcana Album)
''The Dark Tower'' is the sixteenth concept album by Nox Arcana, released as the soundtrack for ''The Dark Tower'' book series by Joseph Vargo. Narratives at the beginning and end of the album provide the storyline of an ancient castle inhabited by a vampire and haunted by ghosts and living gargoyles. The story is set during the time of the First Crusade. The music is predominantly instrumental with piano and pipe organ melodies accented by choirs, chanting, tolling bells and sound effects. Like other Halloween-themed albums by Nox Arcana, this one also contains a secret interactive puzzle that relates to the characters from the books. Nox Arcana
Nox Arcana is the American neoclassical dark wave, dark ambient musical project of Joseph Vargo. It was founded in 2003 as a duo with William Piotrowski, who left in 2008 to pursue a career in film score composing but still acts as its studio engineer whereas Vargo continued on as a solo act under the name. The name in Latin translates to "mysteries of the night." All of Nox Arcana's music is released independent music, independently on the Monolith Graphics label, a publishing company owned by Vargo. With their third album, Nox Arcana became a ''Billboard Magazine, Billboard'' Top Ten charting artist in the holiday genre. Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. These themes are often approached poetically. Neoclassical dark wave is a subgenre of dark wave music that is characterized by an ethereal atmosphere and soprano vocals as well as strong influences from classical music. Historical context In the middle of the 1980s, the bands Dead Can Dance and In the Nursery released influential albums which essentially laid the foundations of the Neoclassical dark wave genre. A vampire is a mythical creature that subsists by feeding on the Vitalism, vital essence (generally in the form of blood) of the living. First Crusade
The First Crusade (1096–1099) was the first of a series of religious wars, or Crusades, initiated, supported and at times directed by the Latin Church in the medieval period. The objective was the recovery of the Holy Land from Islamic rule. While Jerusalem had been under Muslim rule for hundreds of years, by the 11th century the Seljuk takeover of the region threatened local Christian populations, pilgrimages from the West, and the Byzantine Empire itself.
