The Crossroads Of New York
''The Crossroads of New York'' is a lost 1922 American silent comedy film directed by F. Richard Jones and an all-star cast of silent comedians. It was produced by Mack Sennett and released through First National Distributors. Plot As described in a film magazine, vamp Grace St. Clair (Terry) is willing to accept large checks from millionaire James Flint (Beery) but does not care for his caresses. James' nephew Michael (O'Hara) from the country arrives, fondly expecting to live in luxury at his uncle's home in the city, but he is quickly disillusioned. His uncle gratifies his wish to wear a uniform, but it is of the White Wings street cleaners. Michael goes to live in a cheap boardinghouse where the landlady (Farley) makes violent love to him, and he discovers that he is somehow engaged to her. Mack Sennett
Mack Sennett (born Michael Sinnott; January 17, 1880 – November 5, 1960) was a Canadian-American film actor, director, and producer, and studio head, known as the 'King of Comedy'. Born in Danville, Quebec, in 1880, he started in films in the Biograph Company of New York City, and later opened Keystone Studios in Edendale, California in 1912. Keystone possessed the first fully enclosed film stage, and Sennett became famous as the originator of slapstick routines such as pie-throwing and car-chases, as seen in the Keystone Cops films. He also produced short features that displayed his Bathing Beauties, many of whom went on to develop successful acting careers. Sennett's work in sound movies was less successful, and he was bankrupted in 1933. In 1938 he was presented with an honorary Academy Award for his contribution to film comedy. Herbert Standing
Herbert Standing (13 November 1846 – 5 December 1923) was a British stage and screen actor and the patriarch of the Standing family of actors. He was the father of numerous children, many of whom had careers in theatre and cinema. Toward the end of his life, he appeared in many Hollywood silent films. Standing began in theatre in 1867, and turned to films in 1913. Capitol Theatre (New York City)
The Capitol Theatre was a movie palace located at 1645 Broadway (Manhattan), Broadway, just north of Times Square in New York City, across from the Winter Garden Theatre. Designed by theater architect Thomas W. Lamb, the Capitol originally had a seating capacity of 5,230 and opened October 24, 1919. After 1924 the flagship theatre of the Loews Theatres chain, the Capitol was known as the premiere site of many Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) films. James Finlayson (actor)
James Henderson Finlayson (27 August 1887 – 9 October 1953) was a Scottish actor who worked in both silent and sound comedies. Bald, with a fake moustache, Finlayson had many trademark comic mannerisms and is known for his squinting, outraged, "double take and fade away" head reaction, and characteristic expression "d'ooooooh", and as the best remembered comic foil of Laurel and Hardy. Finlayson was known by a variety of nicknames. Charles Murray (American Actor)
Charles Albert Murray (June 22, 1872 – July 29, 1941), was an American film actor of the silent era. Murray was born in Laurel, Indiana, on June 22, 1872, to Isaac Murray and Martha Ellen "Mollie" Murray (née Sullenburger). Murray was a comedian in vaudeville and on stage for 20 years, forming the Murray and Mack team, before he began acting in films. His first work in films was for Biograph. His work in films included appearing in The Cohens and Kellys series with George Sidney. He appeared in more than 280 films between 1912 and 1938, starting with film shorts. He also directed five films. Murray was married to Nellie Bae Hamilton. He died in Los Angeles, California, from pneumonia. For his contribution to motion pictures, decades after his death, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1725 Vine Street. Life June was born in St. Louis in 1905. She was an American actress appearing in silent films. June starred in Troubles of a Bride in 1924 with Robert Agnew and Alan Hale. and in the similarly themed ''Matrimony Blues'' in 1926 with Lige Conley. The following year she starred in ''The Snarl of Hate'' and she was co-writer of the 1927 film ''Crazy to Act'', in which she and Oliver Hardy starred. Her last part in a film was a small one in ''Our Relations'' which starred Laurel and Hardy in 1936. She died young from alcoholism in Hollywood in 1940 from cirrhosis of the liver.
