''The Courier of Lyon'' (French: ''L'affaire du courrier de Lyon'') is a 1937 French historical drama film directed by Claude Autant-Lara and Maurice Lehmann and starring Pierre Blanchar, Dita Parlo and Jacques Copeau.The A to Z of French Cinema p.31 It is based on the Courrier de Lyon case of 1796. A previous silent film inspired by the story, was released in 1923. It was shot at the Epinay Studios in Paris. The film's sets were designed by the art director Jacques Krauss. Claude Autant-Lara
Claude Autant-Lara (; 5 August 1901 – 5 February 2000) was a French film director and later Member of the European Parliament (MEP). Biography Born at Luzarches in Val-d'Oise, Autant-Lara was educated in France and at London's Mill Hill School during his mother's exile as a pacifist. Early in his career, he worked as an art director and costume designer; his best-known work in this vein was possibly for ''Nana'' (1926), a silent film directed by Jean Renoir. Autant-Lara also acted in the film. As a director, he frequently created provocative movies, saying "if a film does not have venom, it is worthless". In the 1960s, he turned his back on the New Wave movement, and from then on he had no popular successes. On 18 June 1989, he came to public notice again, controversially, when he was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the National Front and the oldest member of the assembly. Pierre Alcover (14 March 1893 – 14 November 1957) was a French stage and film actor. He starred in 40 films between 1918 and 1943. In 1920 he starred in the film ''Champi-Tortu''. One of his most notable performances was in Marcel L'Herbier's 1928 film ''L'Argent (1928 film), L'Argent'', as the corrupt banker Saccard. He was the second husband of the film actress Gabrielle Colonna-Romano, and they are buried together in the cimetière de Rueil-Malmaison. Monique Joyce
Monique Joyce (1912–1994) was a French model, singer and actress.Burch & Sellier p.157 She began her career appearing in Opéra comique. After winning the Mademoiselle Paris contest in March 1933 she received greater public attention and made her first film appearance that year. During the Occupation of France she appeared in several productions by the German-backed Continental Films that later led to charges of collaboration. Her final role was a supporting part in the 1943 film ''Late Love'' directed by Gustav Ucicky and made in Vienna. Following the Liberation of Paris in 1944 she headed to the Sigmaringen enclave where the Vichy government in exile was headquartered for the final months of the war. Sylvia Bataille (born Sylvia Maklès; 1 November 1908 – 22 December 1993) was a French actress of Romanian-Jewish descent. When she was twenty, she married the writer Georges Bataille with whom she had a daughter, the psychoanalyst Laurence Bataille (1930–1986). Georges Bataille and Sylvia separated in 1934 but did not divorce until 1946. Starting in 1938, she was a companion of the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan with whom, in 1941, she had a daughter, Judith (married name Judith Miller). Sylvia Bataille married Jacques Lacan in 1953. A pupil of Charles Dullin, Bataille's theatrical debut was with the agit-prop troupe Groupe Octobre, directed by Jacques Prévert. Epinay Studios
The Epinay Studios are film production studios located in Epinay in northern Paris. It was a complex with two distinct and separate structures. The earliest was built in 1902 by Eclair Film.
