''The Coolangatta Gold'' is a 1984 Australian film which led to the establishment of the iron man race The Coolangatta Gold. Plot Joe Lucas is determined that his son Adam will become a champion iron man. He neglects his younger son, Steve, who is an aspiring band manager and enjoys karate, as well as being his brother's training partner. The leading iron man event is The Coolangatta Gold, an arduous competition for $20,000 prize money. The favorite for this event is champion iron man Grant Kenny. Kenny's father beat Joe Lucas for the iron man title in 1960. Steve falls in love with a ballet dancer, Kerri, who inspires him to compete with his brother in The Coolangatta Gold. Bermagui is a town on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia in the Bega Valley Shire. It lies on the shores of the southern end of Horseshoe Bay. The name is derived from the Dyirringanj word, ''permageua'', possibly meaning "canoe with paddles". History A wharf was built in Horseshoe Bay in 1888 for the coastal trade. The port was serviced by the Illawarra and South Coast Steam Navigation Company. A 1910 article, "Bermagui – In a Strange Sunset", published by Henry Lawson in '' The Bulletin'' describes a steamer journey from Bermagui to Sydney. Lawson was probably travelling with the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. In 1880, the Government geologist, Lamont Young, and four others disappeared while on a boat trip from Bermagui.
