The Common Cause
''The Common Cause'' is a lost 1919 American silent comedy film directed and produced by J. Stuart Blackton and distributed by Vitagraph Company of America. It is based on a play, ''Getting Together'', by Ian Hay, J. Hartley Manners, and Percival Knight. Plot As described in a film magazine, Helene Palmer (Breamer) is estranged from her husband Orrin (Rawlinson) due to the attentions paid to her by a man about town. After the United States enters World War I, she takes up war work and pleads with men from all walks of life on the steps of the New York City public library to enlist. Her husband joins his company and goes abroad, and she induces her male friend to also join the colors. She then goes to France where she ministers to the sick and destitute. The Germans invade the town and she remains behind with those too ill to be moved. Anthony Paul Kelly
Anthony Paul Kelly (1897 – September 26, 1932) was an American playwright and screenwriter. Biography Born in 1897 in New York City, Kelly wrote for 60 films between 1914 and 1930, and also wrote the play ''Three Faces East'', which was the basis for two films of the same name. In 1926, Kelly gained notice for suing Al Jolson for breach of contract. The jury was discharged after failing to reach an agreement on a verdict. He died in Manhattan in 1932 after committing suicide by inhaling gas. Kelly was battling an incurable case of tuberculosis at the time of his suicide. Huntley Gordon
Huntley Ashworth Gordon (October 8, 1879 – December 7, 1956) was a Canadian actor who began his career in the Silent Film era. Profile Gordon was born in Montreal, Quebec, educated in both Canada and England. He had various jobs including working in a bank, in a silver mine, contracting, as a commercial traveller, and being a cigarette factory owner before settling on the stage and at one time acted with Ethel Barrymore. His Broadway credits included ''Life'' (1914) and ''Our Mrs. McChesney'' (1915). He began his screen career in 1916 when given a chance by Thomas Ince. Gordon was once a model for Arrow Collars; he was once painted by American commercial illustrator J. C. Leyendecker. He served in the Canadian Army during World War I and began a career in motion pictures in England where he had been stationed during the war. Vitagraph Studios, also known as the Vitagraph Company of America, was a United States motion picture studio. It was founded by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith in 1897 in Brooklyn, New York, as the American Vitagraph Company. By 1907, it was the most prolific American film production company, producing many famous silent films. It was bought by Warner Bros. in 1925. History In 1896, English émigré Blackton was moonlighting as a reporter/artist for the New York ''Evening World'' when he was sent to interview Thomas Edison about his new film projector. The inventor talked the entrepreneurial reporter into buying a set of films and a projector. A year later, Blackton and business partner Smith founded the American Vitagraph Company in direct competition with Edison. A third partner, distributor William "Pop" Rock, joined in 1899.
