''The Chocolate Frog'' was a short Australian play by Jim McNeil. It was written when McNeil was in prison. The play was first performed in Parramatta Gaol by the Resurgents' Club, a club set up by inmates interested in debating ideas. The performance was seen by several theatre identities, including Katharine Brisbane, the national theatre critic of ''The Australian''. They later assisted McNeil in his application for parole. Jim McNeil
James Thomas McNeil (23 January 1935 – 16 May 1982) was an Australian award-winning playwright. While serving a 17-year sentence in Parramatta Correctional Centre for armed robbery and shooting a police officer, McNeil began writing plays. Within a few years he was being hailed as one of Australia's three most significant playwrights of the 20th century. He was released on parole 10 years early, won an Australian Writers' Guild Award and married actress and director Robyn Nevin, from whom he later separated. Parramatta Correctional Centre
The Parramatta Correctional Centre is a heritage-listed former medium security prison for males on the corner of O'Connell and Dunlop Streets, North Parramatta, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was in operation between 1798 and 2011. The centre was initially called Parramatta Gaol until its name was changed to Parramatta Correctional Centre in 1992. When in operation, the centre was managed by Corrective Services NSW, an agency of the Department of Attorney General and Justice of the Government of New South Wales. Immediately prior to its closure, the centre detained short term sentenced and remand inmates, operated as a transient centre, and was the periodic detention centre for metropolitan Sydney. Katharine Brisbane
Katharine Brisbane AM (born 1932) is an Australian journalist and publisher, well known for her writings as a theatre critic. Early life and education Katharine Brisbane was born in Singapore in 1932, to David Williams, a civil engineer, and Myra Glady Brisbane. She spent her early years growing up in Western Australia, living in Peppermint Grove. Brisbane graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia. During her time at UWA she participated in student theatre, firstly designing costumes and then moving onto directing productions. Career After graduating she became a cadet at ''The West Australian'', and spent 18 months in London. She took up the position of theatre critic for ''The West Australian'' from 1959 to 1961, and again from 1962 to 1965. AusStage: The Australian Live Performance Database is an online database which records information about live performances in Australia, providing records of productions from the first recorded performance in Australia (1789, by convicts) up until the present day. The only repository of Australian performing arts in the world, it is managed by a consortium of universities, government agencies, industry organisations and arts institutions, and mostly funded by the Australian Research Council.
