The Chicago Maternity Center Story
''The Chicago Maternity Center Story'' is a 1976 feature-length documentary film produced by Kartemquin Films. It tells the story of The Chicago Maternity Center as it fights to stay open despite declining funding. The center had been open for 75 years, but was forced to close in light of modern medicine's changing attitude toward home birth and subsequent lack of resources. The film is structured in two parts. It first follows the story of Scharene Miller, who was one of the last mothers to use the Maternity Center's home birthing services. The backdrop to this personal story is provided in the broader context of the rise of corporate medicine and the current barriers for the poor in accessing quality medical care. The work of the Center's director, Beatrice Tucker, and other staff are highlighted throughout, as are the demonstrations that attempted to keep the work going. Gordon Quinn is Artistic Director and founding member of Kartemquin Films and a 2007 recipient of the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. Gordon Quinn has been making documentaries for over 45 years and has produced or directed over 30 films. His recent directing credits include ''Prisoner of Her Past'' and '' A Good Man''. His producing credits include the films ''Hoop Dreams''; '' In the Family'';''Vietnam, Long Time Coming''; ''Golub: Late Works Are the Catastrophes''; '' 5 Girls''; ''Refrigerator Mothers''; and '' Stevie''. Beatrice Edna Tucker
Beatrice Edna Tucker (October 4, 1897 or 1898June 12, 1984) was an American obstetrician and gynecologist. Tucker was the medical director of the Chicago Maternity Center for over forty years, providing access to home births for poor people in Chicago. She also worked as an advocate for equitable access to reproductive healthcare, lobbying for legalized abortion and access to birth control. Early life and education Beatrice Edna Tucker was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Various sources give her date of birth as either October 4, 1897 or October 4, 1898. Her father Evan Tucker, formerly a grocer, began practicing medicine after she was born despite not having a medical license. The family moved frequently to avoid lawsuits, although her father was eventually licensed as an optometrist.
