''The Cell'' is an Australian play by Robert Wales. The setting is in a school for delinquent girls. Background The play debuted in 1966. The play was published in 1971. 1968 Australian TV Version It was adapted for television by the ABC in 1968, directed by John Croyston, and broadcast as part of the Seek and Destroy series. That was a short lived anthology series which consisted of four BBC plays and one Australian play - ''The Cell'' was the Australian play. Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time. History ''The Canberra Times'' was launched in 1926 by Thomas Shakespeare along with his oldest son Arthur Shakespeare and two younger sons Christopher and James. The newspaper's headquarters were originally located in the Civic retail precinct, in Cooyong Street and Mort Street, in blocks bought by Thomas Shakespeare in the first sale of Canberra leases in 1924. John Croyston
John Croyston (7 March 1933 - 23 May 2007) was an Australian writer, radio producer and director. He studied at the University of Sydney and worked as a teacher before going on to work at the ABC. He was a radio producer at the ABC from 1958 to 1964. He then moved into television. Ruth Cracknell
Ruth Winifred Cracknell AM (6 July 1925 – 13 May 2002) was an Australian character and comic actress, comedienne and author, her career encompassing all genres including radio, theatre, television and film. She appeared in many dramatic as well as comedy roles throughout a career spanning some 56 years. In theatre she was well known for her Shakespeare roles. Early life Cracknell was born in 1925 in Maitland, New South Wales to Charles and Winifred Cracknell. When she was four years old, the family moved to Sydney. She was educated at North Sydney Girls High School and, after graduating, worked at the Ku-ring-gai Council as a clerk. At 17 she was taken to the theatre by a friend. Don Crosby
George Wallace Donald Crosby, OAM (29 October 1924 – 3 December 1985) was an Australian actor of radio, stage, television and film, radio producer, stage manager, airman and trade unionist. Early life The fifth child of actor Joseph Alexander (Marshall) Crosby and Theresa Crosby (formerly King), George Wallace Donald Crosby was named after his father's friend, the actor and comedian George Stevenson Wallace.
